Who drops Acorns?
Since the Acorn crop is so thick this year in my area. I pick up a few before I get up in the stand and drop them throughout the hunt.
Anyone else ever try this. I have yet to have it work but only do it about every other year when the acorns are on thick.

I don't know if I'd be allowed to do that here in Illinois. It might be considered "baiting".
Is it the sound of the acorn dropping, or the smell that you are after?

Sounds like a bunch of hoo haa if you ask me. If the acorns are dropping naturally why try to add more unnecessary movement and noise? Sounds like an old wives tale to me tagger. Ever talk to anyone who could actually verify that by their dropping acorns the deer came running in and offered a perfect 20 yard broadside shot or any kind of shot for that matter?

Not with acorns, but I did it with paw-paws once. I gathered up a bunch in a grove and smeared them on the tree I was in as a cover scent. I ate quite a few, they are quite sweet, and every so often I would toss one out about twenty yards from my tree.
Well, just about dusk this big doe comes out of the brush and walked right up to one I tossed out. Man, she jumped 3 feet straight up when she sniffed it. She setteled down and approached it again. Whack! Never got to take that nibble.

I just read an article on the Buckmasters site the other day on this exact same thing. It was a story that a reader could submit.
He claimed he was hunting and this nice 10 pointer came out looking for food. The squirels were running and dropping acorns and the deer would go and eat them up as the dropped them. SO the next day he picked up a pocket full with rubber gloves on. When the buck came out, he started to toss them and the deer came right in head down and he shot him at like 10 yards I think.
But the critters around here don't eat to much on the acorns beings we have acres beyond acres of corn and soybeans.

RE: Who drops Acorns?
Hey guys I am new to this site and this is my first bow season since 1987. I can tell you from years of rifle hunting in Arkansas and Oklahoma that the deer in those locales generally prefer acorns over corn. An uncle who hunted in Texas for years retired back home to Arkansas. He brought his nice corn feeders with him. He was excited about the way his corn disappeared. When we looked closely we discovered it really was. The squirrels, turkeys, opossums, coons and wild hogs were certainly getting much fatter. However the deer would not touch it unless there was virtually no mast crop that year.
I have personally watched several does feeding on the acorns being knocked loose or dropped by 3 fox squirrels up in one of the overcup trees here in OK. Never tried the trick but if properly done it cannot hurt.....but may not help. By the way, the Buckmaster story is at this URL.

I would have a hard time NOT stepping on an acorn on my way to my stand. I dont believe the sound of another acorn dropping would attract anything. In fact if we weren't there , would it make a sound at all?<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hey sooner, how did you get to that story? Is there a way to look at the archives?
