Hunting when leaves have fallen
What do you all think about hunting when the leaves have fallen off the trees? Do deer stay closer to their bedding areas since the woods are now bare? By mid-week next, most leaves will be down. Any tips for this?

This is the time when the deer hunting is at it's best. I usually make sure my stand is a little higher and tucked into the branches good. I've killed many deer after the leaves fall.
Good luck! |
RE: Hunting when leaves have fallen
I hear ya. It's about to be that time of year here in NJ and I vividly recall a few years back where one afternoon my buddy and I were hunting and all was good. We returned the very next day to hunt all morning and the difference between those two days were day and night. What i mean is that Saturday morning it looked like a nuclear bomb went off from our prior day of hunting as about 99% of the leaves fell overnight and we could see for about 1/4 mile thru the woods! It was wierd!
But, you adapt. I have a few trees I use my climber in where I have a good background or another tree I use that splits into a huge 'Y' right at the ground and the one part of the tree I don't climb provides me with decent concealment. Otherwise, you try to climb a bit higher or amongst a grouping of trees. |

Its not so much me I'm worried about, but do the deers activities change much when this happens? Do they hold tighter to their bedding areas for a few days until they're accustomed to the new look of the woods, or do they go about their business as usual?
