Brox:
I'm no spelling police....by any means....but it's spelled PIEBALD. You'll probably get more replies if you go back and edit it. Just an fyi. I meant nothing by it. I HONESTLY didn't know what a PIEBALD was, either....until I did a search. That's all I'm saying. Jeff |
RE: PYBAL FAWN
Brox, I knew what you meant...
Hmmm... tough call, there. I'd love to have a piebald hide tanned as a throw in a log house, but I would want it to be a mature deer... And-- like you pointed out -- it would be a once-in-a-lifetime trophy if it indeed turned out to be a huge buck in his later years... |
RE: PYBAL FAWN
what is a piebald deer. is it a half regular half albino deer?
|
RE: PYBAL FAWN
I'd take it now if i got the chance. If there was a piebald fawn last season that got shot, chances are that this one might not make it either. And even if it is a buck, it will take another year or two to grow a decent rack. And i think the odds of a piebald making it through two or three hunting seasons is pretty slim, especially since other people are hunting the same area. If it was a private farm that only you hunted, I'd say let it walk. But with other people hunting the area, i'd say theres a good chance someone else will end up shooting it.

RE: Piebald FAWN
I would not shoot it. I would take the chance it grows up.
To answer a few questions for others. Piebalds have patches of white and brown or all white coat with brown eyes. Albino have all white coat and pink eyes. There also is a melanism deer with an all black coat. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
RE: Piebald FAWN
Melanistic deer dont necessarily have an all black coat, but rather are much darker in color than a regular deer...just to clarify.
also, piebalds are the most common, then albino, then melanistic i think melanistic is something like 1:1,000,000 or some crazy odds like that, i've only ever seen 2 pictures of them, the one about and then a lady shot one a few years ago. I wonder if albinism, and melanism is common in Mulie's or other deer species? could be interesting! |
