RE: Any good hunting videos?
They do hunt their own land. Land they tend to all year round. They work non stop to make it the perfect hunting place. Thats all they do with it. I like them too, and if I could do that year round I would too. But lets face it the vast majority of hunters do not have that type of opportunity. Sure a few food plots here and there but to basically buy 1000 acres plots in prime locations....Iowa, Illinois and Northern Missouri (I think) and then build them into the perfect locations. Sure would be nice.
I just dont think there is anyone out there representing the average hunter! Doesnt make them all bad, just not normal hunting conditions. What type of land do you hunt? |
RE: Any good hunting videos?
If you are looking for videos that aren't basically a 30min or 1hr infomercial for some damned product then you just about have to go back too some of the better vids made in the 80s. Now I can't stand the man but Dan Fitzgerald's "Just Passin Thru" is one of his better early vids. And probably my all around most favorite hunting tape of all time featured my mentors the Wensel brothers, "Bowhunting October Whitetails". It is the Casablanca of hunting tapes IMHO.
Another seriest that I REALLY like are the old King of the North productions. Now if memory serves me correctly (which it seldom does) they were filmed on what we all recognize and know today as the Legends Ranch. But those tapes like The Rifleman and the Bowhunting tapes were GREAT production quality and didn't feature the first commercial indorsement of any products. I wonder if anyone has put them on DVD recently? Try those for a starting place, they are good entertainment and in the cases of Bowhunting Oct Whitetails you will learn alot from the masters themselves. Videos by Paul Bruner from that ear were also great. Bruner, the Wensels and a few others were really cutting edge and well ahead of their time back then. I am excited about Brothers of the bow as well, ANYTHING by the Wensels get's my nod just on their merits alone! RA |
RE: Any good hunting videos?
Are there any instructional videos still around? Seems like they're all just deer viewing videos. Seems like in the 80's people were trying to teach you something. Now it's just getting footage of unbelievable (literally) bucks.
livetoplay804the difference between videos and us is that we don't have to produce 9-15 decent kills EVERY year in order to keep our job. It's a brutal pace that leads them to take the easiest guarantee of multiple kills. I think if you reject the "Most Big Bucks on Film" approach and go with the "This is How to Be a Better Hunter Where You Hunt" approach you don't feel that pressure. But apparently that type of video doesn't market well anymore because they've dissappeared. |

I like Deer Hunter, I got it a few years ago and I think it's pretty realistic. I lost the video though but I remember it came with this games demo. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sports/deerhunter/The guy was hunting in by a apple field the first hunt.

RE: Any good hunting videos?
Everyone makes valid points. I think the market is too commercial and everyone is pressured in showing hunters taking big bucks using ABC grunt call or ABC deer scent.
I will tell you another video that I consider a classic.....Ben Lee Huntin' the Rut. Great instructional video and just fun to watch. This was before the big push on shooter bucks and game ranches and outfitters so there are some smaller deer harvested, but you really get a good feel on this video. They also play taps before each kill which is sad but awesome. Instructional, Mossy Oak had two out a few years ago called Deer School 1 and Deer School 2. Also Lohman had one out too. Pretty good really. Dan Fitzgerald..... I never did like him. Little to egotistical for me. I watched him take a shot on a deer one time that he purposly waited until the deer was in between a fork of a tree to see if he could make the shot. Little too much for me, but thats just my opinion. Vanilla Killa, had some, didnt do me any good. I think its the same stuff you can buy at the grocery store to put in your home made cookies. I guess I am going to have to check out these Wensel Brothers. |
