Falling asleep in the Stand
I rarely fall asleep in the stand, until last week. I've been getting up at 4:30 for 4 days in a row, and hunting from sunrise to sunset. At about 1-2 PM I find myself using a nearby branch as a pillow. Do you ever sleep while on the stand?

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I try not to, but sometimes it is hard to stay awake, especially when nothing is moving! That is when you wake up to Mr. Mossy Horns 15 yds away staring right at you.. Oh well, now you can just dream about him... I don't miss in my dreams!:D

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
Oh yah, just remember to wear your safety belt!!
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
The first deer I shot with a bow I woke up and there he was, 10 yards.
I try not to sleep in the stand, but wow the woods is a great place to fall asleep. I'll prop my foot up against a branch and tuck my head into the split in the tree behind me and catch a few. |
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I already have a coupletimes this year only to wake up twice looking over my stand!!!!! I caught myself before i fell though.........(and i was wearing my harness) Then another time i woke up to two does looking at me 20 yrds away............that kinda sucked too.

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I fell asleep while on the ground one afternoon many years ago. But, I have yet to fall asleep in the stand. I do close my eyes and tilt my head back to relax, but my ears remain very alert.
I'll be in your shoes next week. Nex Wednesday I am hunting from sunrise to sunset and then again Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday so I might report that i did fall asleep from hunting too hard! |
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
i do somtimes..especially when nottin movin..one time i was in my stand i slept till 10:00 at night and my body hade to come over and wake me up
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I nod off but dont let myself fall asleep because as I'm going out, I get the feeling of falling forward and that aint a feeling I like to have in a tree.[&:]

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
Snorin's just as good as a buck grunt..........right?? [8D]
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I only rest my eyes from time to time. I have found that you can't drive a car with your eyes closed and you similarly can't shoot a buck with them closed either.....:D

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
Isn't that part of deer hunting ? Like a previous post, I always wear a safety harness while taking my snooze...
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
i used to loathe it. never could do it. but more and more, being busy with school and staying at friends houses till 1130 the nite before i go hunting, i just have to some days. during the rut im gonna have to stay awake, but i usually catch power naps in 10 minute spurts, just enough to get some rest but stay alert. thats why i try and get on stand early in the afternoon during everning hunts, so i can catch a few Z's right away and be alert when teh deer are moving.
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I usually take naps now and again. If I am doing the whole day I am bound to take a nap at some point. Last Sat. I was napping around 1:00 and all of a sudden I heard some footsteps and sprang awake to see a small buck walking under me. I try to nap whenthe deer are not going to move but with the rut coming, they could come at anytime.

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
Yup... I have dozed off to sleep a few times in my Summit Viper X4. That climber is so comfortable, it's like a Lazy-boy recliner 22' up in a tree! :D[8D] As long as I have my harness (I don't even THINK of climbing the tree without it!), I know I'll be safe and secure and can nod off to sleep if the opportunity calls for it.
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
some of the best sleep i've ever had was while hanging from my harness....lol...probably not the smartest thing to do but it works...i just make sure all the slack is gone and then lean forward...after a bit your neck starts to hurt but it's like sleeping on the clouds....my climber is comfy too....i work until 11pm and then have an hour drive home almost, wake up at 3 or 4 and then hunt from dark to dark....it wears ya out so i've got to catnap once in awhile...around 8am it gets really bad but i've been forcing myself to stay awake.
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
i never have as far as i know lol
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
Nope. I can't say I have. I'm always extremely alert while deer hunting.....but then I usually start to day dream and then come back to reality with a deer coming towards me.

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I have a lot of different stands, one of which is a tree lounge. I don't climb with it, I have it set in probably my most productive early season buck hangout. I have a ladder going up to it. I must admit, that sucker is so comfortable its easy to sleep in if you choose too. Its also a great stand to sleep in all night in the early season, heat of late August and early September if a guy wants to hunt an evening hunt, sleep all night and be there at daylight. I woke up one morning after sleeping all night in it...to 12 head of elk under me!

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
man i just cant...i do rest the ole eyes from time to time but like others have said the ears stay up ...cant imagine fallin out since i rarely wear a harness[&:]i know i know i should but dont

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
This past Saturday I actually snorted while asleep and woke myself. I too was just resting my eyes.
My son works off shifts and was in stand one day just under a half hour and was woken when he fell from stand and hung by his belts and one foot. I am thankful he listens to the old man and always wears his belts. I can not do all day shifts in stand (like I like to do during the rut) for two or three days in a row without a nap now and then. |
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I was in Ill this last week and spent 12hrs everyday for a week on stand. I slept like a fat baby in the hot afternoons. I was woken by several deer through out the day waking in the woods. I tried but was unable not to fall asleep on stand. I wonder how many walked past that I did not see.??????

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
Yeah, I'd bet that almost everyone has dosed off a time or two in their stands, just don't want to admit it. I know the first time I nearly fell out of my stand from dosing off, I started wearing a harness all the time.

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
MAn I love sleeping in the woods! I have a summit viper, Great for napping. The vey first deer I killed I wsa 14, woke up and there was a huge spike 10 yards from me, looking the other way. Yeah, sleeping in the stand is great.

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
O.K. We (almost) all have slept in a stand from time to time. In fact, my new stand will have a very nice seat just for this purpose!
However, what about taking care of "Other" bussiness when in the stand. I bring a thermos with coffe and keep plenty of water with me. I pack a lunch (a quiet one) too. The problem is, after a thermos ful of water and a days supply of water, pretty soon, and more than once, I will have to "go." I hate getting down and no matter how carefull I am, I make noise. I also dont want to take car of my bussiness from the stand. I am afraid that that is a red light and siren that a human is near by. I keep an old bicycle bottle with me to take care of #1. It is only good for about 2 times before it fills up, but it beats getting down from the stand and scaring off any deer. |
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I can't stay awake sometimes, it sucks
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I always fall alseep in my stand. Usually for about 5 minutes at a time. That is why I adjust my belt to stop me from leaning too far forward while sitting.
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
My problem is that I'm always falling asleep in the tree. I live in Brooklyn, NY and wake up at 2:00AM, shower and drive 130 miles ( VERY TIRED DRIVING UP). After hunting a bit I tend to doze off. I hate that feeling. I feel like I'm falling or totally disoriented when opening my eyes. Or I get the jerks! HATE IT.
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I usually am on hangons and if I get too sleepy I'll sometimes tie myself tight to the trunk of the tree, under my arms and go to sleep.(of course I also have my harness on too but don't want to use it by falling off the stand)If I'm real sleepy I'll just get down on the ground and sleep. A short nap and I should be good to go and I still am somewhat concious of the sounds around me and still in the woods.
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
If i know i'm going to sleep i use a ground blind. Nothing like waking up while dropping 35 feet.
|
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
I don't dare fall asleep in the stand I usually use. I would wake up with a jolt hanging from my harness.
Now, If I was using my Ol' man climber, that might be a different story.;) |
RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
Sometimes I go out to the woods to relax more than hunt. I take some naps while Im out there. I have a nice comftrable stand and i feel safe that i wouldnt fall out of it. The sounds of the woods puts me to sleep. Dont have to deal with the nagging and complaining of the girlfriend while Im out there.

RE: Falling asleep in the Stand
It's one of the pleasures of early season hunting that I look forward to. Later season it is too cold to sleep. But a nice 60 degree day with a slight breeze and the sun on your face... you just don't find better sleep than that, especially in a Summit Viper. During the rut, though, I willput my left onein vice gripsto stay awake.
