Small Bucks Chasing First?

I have seen small bucks, 3-4 pointers, chasing the does around but I haven't seen any bigger bucks yet. Do you guys think the small bucks try to get to the does first before the rut really kicks in and the big boys chase them away? Just wondering why I haven't seen the big bucks yet.

Same here. This little stud came to sniff the gut pile of a doe i shot in the morning. Looked up at me just as I snapped the pic

Yes guys, unless that doe is in "estrus" the mature/localdominatebuck or competing dominate bucks..generally won't waste his/their time until the time is right. He/they have too many rounds to make and they know they need to make as many count as possible. The dominate bucks will do the best they can to check doe familys for ripe does and then move in, do thier job and move on... The young guys will pester the"shelas" before they are ready to breed only to get whooped off the does when a dominator rolls in...

Exactly what I've seen time and time again. Last week was the week teh small 'uns were roaming in VA. Later on this week and next should be good for the big'uns.

I agree with Shed and have witnessed it first hand last week. It is with great expectation when I enter the woods this Thursday for the next week or so.

The big boys know better. They will be held up with their local doe(s) until they have bred her, then they will start cruising and kicking a$$.
