14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
yesterday in southern Ohio a 14 year old boy was shot by his father with a cross bow. Sources say that the father shot into some corn because he thought it was a deer when it was his boy. This goes to show how careful we all need to be when hunting.

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
I don't know if I want to even take the time to justify this ludicrous imbecile with a response; I'm sure others will come along and do it more justice!
There's absolutely NO excuse for that. It's so bad that it would make me wonder if the idiot took out an insurance policy on his son before taking him hunting! I know, that's an extremely bad thought, but I cannot even fathom "shooting into corn" at a noise! I think we could all go on and on about identifying your target before shooting... Cripes! Isn't that the first thing you learn before anyone hands you a weapon of any sort!!!??? Discipline -- not desire -- determines destiny. |
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
Amen MQ1!
Target ID! Gotta be positive. "It's not the kill, it's the adventure and challenge! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>" |
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
I would agree with MQ1, either this man is a large enough moron that he is danger to us all, or there is something very fishy about said "accident".
|
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
I've passed up plenty of deer because the animal didn't present a good shot or the area down range may have been unsafe for a shot. Be careful out there.

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
I hope he isn't in my part of Ohio! If I catch a guy taking shots at me I might have to add him to my list of huntable game! That's ridiculous to shoot at something when you don't even know what it is! God bless, Brandan |

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
It's been said, and it will be said, but it obviously cannot be said enough! Identify your F*****G target! You cannot make a shot, let alone a good shot, if you don't know what your shooting at!!! Man this really burns me. You cannot be too careful!! The only shred of justice in this, is that the man will have to live with the fact that in his infinite stupidity, he shot his own son. This is what I mean when I say at the end of every post "measure twice and shoot once"...<font color=red>"MEASURE TWICE":</font id=red> It means know what the hell your shooting at and be double-sure of your target! ARGH!....this is tragic and could have easily been avoided.

MQ1shooter said it all, I feel for the family though,bflem55 what paper was this in or if any who posted here dont mind I would like to print this and the response's from it and use it in my hunter's saftey class that I help teach

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
It was absolutely stupid and violates every hunter safety tip we all learned before we got our first hunting license.
I had a thirteen-year-old son murdered in 1983 and his case has never been solved. This father will never be the same and having caused this tragedy id be surprised if he didn't go crazy or commit suicide. Bowhunter |
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
This is how we all get in trouble, one guy does something stupid and kills his son, then we all look bad. How could you get your son mixed up with a deer? Thats SOOOO stupid

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
I agree -- it's sick and stupid and violates everything i was ever taught about hunting.
And here's another one for you. Here in idaho, a 17 year old was shot dead with a rifle at 8 - 8:30 at night, while on private land, while practicing bugling. He too was sound-shot thru a bush. As an added complication, he was shot by a NezPerce native (who has the "right" to carry a gun during bow season and shoot anything at any time and, from the looks of things, at any place). And to top it all off, the maximum sentence for any crime on the reservation is a total of one year in prison. Since this crime crossed jurisdictions, he may get a different sentence -- but we're not too hopeful; no laws were broken. We are hopeful, tho, that some changes result in the way things are done out here from such a sickening tragedy. |
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
Say a prayer for his father if it was a simple, stupid accident. The rest of his life will be a true living nightmare.
|
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
We've all heard about this type of thing happening for years, especially in rifle season. I've always wondered what kind of moron shoots at a noise. And how many people actually harvest a deer by shooting at a noise? I don't even want to know the answer to that. It seems like he should be charged with something, but then again VC has a great point.

No, I'm not saying this man meant to kill his son but he did. He should have thought about what he was doing before he fired the damn crossbow. As stated above "Identify your targets" It's one of the first things we're all taught before we take to the woods. Personally I've never ever seen a person that looked like a whitetail deer at bowhunting range... If you can't tell this sh*t p*sses me off to no end... God rest this young man's soul... |

IT's terrible, how could somebody every accidently shoot another person while archery hunting. I really don't see how it's possible. Stuff like this should never happen, period!

Quote from the article; It was the first fatal bow hunting accident in Muskingum County since 1994.
Does this stuff happen this often? I sure hope not, I thought this stuff was really rare, i've never heard of anything in this region like that. I don't know about you guys but I sure this father feels about as bad as a father should feel. But a guy that did what he did, should be put away for a while, completely no excuse for it. RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
God, this is pathetic. By all accounts. Pathetic if it was an accident; pathetic if it wasn't. And I agree, VC, if it was, the man's gonna need a whole lotta prayer support in his life -- not that I wouldn't be tempted to say he deserves the agony which he'll go through.
I was actually surprised the bolt hit him in the chest (thanks for posting the link to the story, by the way). Assuming he's a normally tall 14-year-old, wouldn't that be a bit high to be aiming at when trying to kill a deer-sized animal from the ground? All the deer I've ever been around would do well to come up to my waist -- and if you're aiming at the vitals, and not the spine, you'd be aiming a couple feet lower than that. Shoot, what am I doing here? I'm trying to figure this out by applying normal reasoning and pure common sense here... and, obviously, none of that existed during this incident! Discipline -- not desire -- determines destiny. |

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
I agree with BTech-Shooter. This was no accident! That idiot never saw a deer, he saw movement. An accident might be a slug going through a deer and bouncing off of a tree or rock then flying two hundred yards through the woods etc. Seeing something move, hoping it is a deer, so you take a "shot in the dark" is no accident. It is pure stupidity. Most parents do everything possible to keep their kids safe such as teaching them not to do drugs, driving responsibly, not getting involved in the wrong crowd etc etc etc. That boys life taken, and his family's life ruined because this idiot father decided to kill whatever it was that moved a stalk of corn. I feel so sorry for this kids family, except for his dad. He deserves every single ounce of guilt, and it is probably about time that the law start cracking down on this crap IMO.

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
Just plain stupid. Does Ohio have a hunter ed/bowhunter ed requirement or can some idiot just grab a new Xbow and go hunting? IF he had seen a deer he could take that shot 100 times in a row and not one of the arrows would make it through the corn to hit the target. I'm sure he'll be an emotional nothing for the rest of his life. Just plain stupid.
|
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
In Ohio, you can go to a 24hr WallyWorld at 4am and buy a X-bow (or any bow for that matter), bolts(arrows), tags and be in the woods by daybreak. No hunters ed required for adults (kids only), supposed to show proof of previous tag. I've never been checked in 22yrs, never heard of anyone being asked. X-bows are considered regular archery equipment and account for more deer taken than longbows. It is scary to me that there are so many guys out there that are cocked and locked AND they are a TRIGGER PULL away.

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
No, We don't have very tough requirements here in Ohio but guys, how in the hell can you test a person for plain common sense. It's just plain STUPID that a person EVER shoot another person with a bow or crossbow...PERIOD... It should NEVER NEVER NEVER happen. People dressed in camo or blaze orange don't look like freakin deer.. Right?
This is bow hunting.. It's a close range sport...Idenify the freakin target before you shoot. How simple can it be???? Two years ago I shot the biggest buck of my life..I watched the corn tops rustling for nearly 45 mins. I never once even thought about picking up my bow because I thought it was some coon tearing down the corn.... Not until I saw this nice buck come out into the open did I then pick up my bow and shoot him... We need to start punishing these incidents as a crime so maybe then people will get thier heads out of their asses and think.... This stuff really gets me riled up..... |

I don't want anyone getting me confused with you. That deer you posted a picture of is not a yearling doe, it's a fawn you killed, spots still showing on the hind quarter. You say in your post to be sure of your target, which is always a good principle, but did you see the spots on this 20 pound deer? Sorry, I just don't think there is any cause to kill a deer with spots in NJ. There are plenty of other deer to take. |
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
If you kill someone while drinking and driving, they can put you in the slammer. Whats the difference here? Both are an accident. Both are negligent. I think we have to start prosecuting these CRIMINALS.

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
Wow - I can't stop thinking about my 12 year old son now that I've read this post. What is truly unfortunate is that we are "preaching to the choir" so to speak. None of us would do something like that. Why? Because we are conscientious hunters. We discuss, and hopefully follow, identifying our target and once it has been determined that it is "shootable" game we make every effort to make a clean kill. How many posts have we read where someone feels terrible that they lost a deer because of a bad hit? We all feel that we have not paid that animal its proper respect with a bad shot.
We use this forum in order to educate ourselves, socialize with fellow bowhunters, etc. Maybe - just maybe - what we need to do is get the word out about this forum. Everyone that uses a bow or a gun in the name of hunting should read, use, and enjoy this forum. If everyone used this forum as it was intended to be used, tragedies such as this would never - ever happen. Education equates to safety. Ok - I'm officially off of my soapbox. |
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
Can't help but reply to this topic. The father will probably hate his own guts for the rest of his life for his stupidity. I do not know the specific number of deaths in Michigan. I think not more than 12 in the deer hunting season. Some are heart attacks, others from loading or unloading guns at the trunk of a car. Or falling out of their tree stand. There are about 750,000 rifle hunters and 325,000 bow hunters. Statisticly you've got to have a couple of idiots. I would pray that no one is injured or killed. It is not realistic. terry <img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>

It is scary to know that there are people out there shooting at noises. I imagine there are a lot doing this that miss and we never hear about it. Long ago I realized there were a lot of stupid people in this world and I'm sure some of them have to be hunters. Makes you think...

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
I hope he goes to jail for manslaughter and doesn't get out for about 15 years and he can think about his stupidity from behind bars where he isn't a danger to the rest of the population. Or just tie the ignorant SOB up and stone him to death. Either would be appropriate in my opinion.

RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
I know this has been said many times, but you must identify your target, and know what is beyond it. That being said I can't believe this guy took a blind shot not knowing where his 14yr old son was.
|
RE: 14 year old hunter killed in Ohio
This guy violated the first rule of safety, "identification of game"! I hope this was an accident, I don't know how this fellow will go on living?
