I don't think it is a mean face as much as a tired face. I know that by the time I get a deer out of the woods, I'm ready to check it in drop it off at the butcher and take a nap. Usually photo ops don't come until I've just dragged it out of the woods or stopping by the house on the way to the butcher.

I can usually muster up a smile. And even if I didn't smile it still wouldn't be one of those "I am big and tuff" faces.

I'll have smiles for miles when I'm finally holding some heavy horns like that one James. Makes it all worth it.

Once again Rack-attack nice buck my good man.

How about that tail gate photo of Mike Beatty? The trophy to end all trophies too. At least he was smiling big when he was shaking hands with one of the official scorers. I guess by then he realized what he had to be thankful for; who knows.

I always smile in my deer pictures too. Some guys just don't smile though, sometimes it makes them feel like a moron or make them look soft. I know a few guys who've hardly ever smiled in any picture they've taken. Me, on the other hand, always smile in deer pictures especially!

My mind belongs to my work...
My heart belongs to my family...

But my soul...belongs to the woods.

James, here are a few tips for next time:

1. Clean the blood off the deer

2. Don't ride him, he's not a pony.

3. Pay attention to your backdrop. A shot with the trees as a backdrop and no truck in the background would be more appealing.

4. Move away from the tree, the limbs in the foreground distract the viewers eyes.

5. Center the camera lower, the animal is cut off at the bottom and there is more headspace than necessary.

I realize that somebody else obviously took this picture but if you are conscious of the elements of your picture I think you will be amazed at how much better they will turn out.

Good tips, Cabelas4Toys, I have been our "camp photographer" since 1987 and I catch a lot of kidding every year about taking the time to set the picture up properly. The time spent is well worth it when you look back some years later. Thanks again for the tips...Fletch
