Urban Bucks
Startin to hunt a few small patches around the city. Unbelievable so much deer sign so close to civilization. Any advice on hunting in suburbs? These deer are in 5-6 acre patches within city limits. I'm wondering if they are strictly nocturnal.

RE: Urban Bucks
You betcha! Sit there and wait and then shoot! :D And, hope the neighbours don't notice you or don't mind hunting. That is my fear where I'm hunting this year (even though I'm perfectly within the law). Always lots of antis among the urbanites. So just follow this moral: what they don't know, fills your freezer.
And, no, they're not strictly nocturnal. Particularly not during the rut and the post-rut. |
RE: Urban Bucks
All my bowhunting is in suburbia. My biggest spot is 4- 4+ acre lots together & my smallest is just over an acre. They arent nocturnal around here but tend to come out within an hour of sunset & go away an hour or so after sunrise. Figure out which one the different properties are & you'll get your deer. I took 3, 2 does & a 6 point last year off that smaller lot. Like was mentioned above the biggest issue can be neighbors on smaller lots as the deer dont always run the right way to die.

RE: Urban Bucks
I can't hunt them but we have lots of deer right here in Toronto, I see good bucks right off the 401 surrounded by highrise condos, they travel a floodplain and golf courses that go right downtown.

RE: Urban Bucks
I've seen what seems like an endless amount of does in the suburbs. My parents have does that you could walk outside and almsot touch, but I have never seen any bucks. I know they are out there someplace though.

RE: Urban Bucks
I have hunted suburbia for years. The key to hunting around neighborhoods is hunt when the humans are quiet. Be it early mornings, cold cold days, or any other time there isn't a bunch of people out cutting grass, talking, etc.
Afternoons usually aren't anywhere near as good as mornings unless its raining or nasty weather. I love hunting neighborhood deer. They are just so oblivious!!! |
RE: Urban Bucks
I hunt just inside the woods from the deer crossing signs

RE: Urban Bucks
yea....tons of sign but that doesn't always mean they are on that piece of ground.....if they are there at the time, you will get them....other times you won't see a thing cause they are hiding in another area much like the one you are hunting.....i got a doe last week off a little piece of ground like this near fairfax va:D

RE: Urban Bucks
Those deer seem to be almost tame --but it's all an act! :D
I hunt a suburban area too--it's my best spot. The deer will walk into some of the neighbor's yards while they're mowing the grass. However, if you set one foot in "their" woods, they're as able as any deer to bust you. Like Il Hunter says, the bucks aren't exactly plentiful. The landowner who gave me permission says he sees does all the time, but no bucks. I know they're there, but mostly nocturnal for now . . . |
