So here's what i'm gonna say, you have to be able to hit the spine. PERIOD. You WILL NOT get both lungs, ever. Don't aim trying to hit the vitals on the money, cuz you won't get 'em. You have to hit the spine and go through the heart, that's your best choice. Remember a heart shot takes away the pumping mechanism, so the deer won't pump as much blood as you would expect. You have to know what you're comfortable with. I've taken numerous deer direclty underneath me with a spine kill. But only because I know I can hit the spine, and where the heart is.

I have learned a lot from this experience. I can assure you all that I will never make this mistake again. The thing was that I had never really discussed this shot with experienced hunters before. So I figured that if I aim towards the vitals between the shoulder blades I would have an easy kill. I consider myself educated on this subject and will not attempt it ever again. Just to let you guys know this deer did travel a very long way. He ran for like 100 yards and then began walking and spewing massive amounts of blood. When I found the area that he lost a lot of blood I thought I had a sure kill. After tracking it a lot further the blood trail thinned to nothing. I followed the blood trail for well over .5 mile. I have never had to track a deer this far before. I appreciate everyones comments. I had a feeling I would get this type of reaction out of people.
