Monster Va. Buck

The rut hit hard here today in Virginia. Were going to have a frost tonight! I got in my stand at about 4:00 today and in about 10 minutes had two buttons under menearan acorn raining oak tree. After they moved on I grunted anda four pointer appeared behind me. This four was BIG and didn't have any brow tines! So I let him have it( I think he needed to be taken out of the gene pool!) Then after he died (clean shot) a few does crested the ridge so I grunted! Man you won't believe the monster eightthat busted threw and stopped right were I had just shot the four! Luckily I had alreadyrecocked my crossbow and snap I put one right threw his chest! He didn't even run out of view and stumbled over. Well thats it, one of my most exciting hunts. Yes it's now legal for anyoneto use crossbow in Va., Thanks Fish and Game or whomever decided on that one. I've already harvested five. Anyways he's at least 180 pounds anA-typical eight point withboth antlers identical, he's got mass, high tines, wide spread, I could'nt of dreamed of a better buck. I'm leading the big buck contest at my butchers facility. I hope all of you get lucky this year, remember to use estrus on scent cottons, and grunt!!

P.S. I'll post pics later my butcher took them!! "Gadell's in Catlett"

I harvested him with a 50cal.black powder at about 9:00 AM 04'.His doe came out of a thickit and milled around for about5 minutes and then he followed. He was very skittish I had 1 second to take him. Igrazed his chest hiting him in the eye (cornering away) and then with two more follow up shots he was down! Then his doe came by me and I took her too. Iwould have done good in the cival-war speed loading that powder!Anyways he's a main frame 10 withthree kickers(would of benfour but one's broke), split brow tine and a couple of character points! This bad boy is on the wall!!!!
Thanks
Dave Stevens

Hey Diesel77, my first shot knocked the BLEEP out of him, it hit 1 inch behind his right eye and came out of the socket,he rolled around. I loaded another 150 grains(pyrodex pellets) ,300 grain sabot and then he stood back up.Hehad small trees in the way of his chest so I hit him just behind it. He went down again! After reloading he stood back up again. This time his chest was wide open and I put him down for good. When I reloaded my forth and final round his doe came by me, she was standing still thewhole time! I hope he hadbred plenty of does. That my only concern with hunting beforeor during the rut. But ifYOU don't take them first someone else will!!

I know this is the archery furoms and all so thanks everyone I'll get some pics of my bow killeight today after my hunt.

Great deer. Glad you had successan all but..... no offense dude... and this may just be me.... But I don't believe a crossbow should be considered a bow. I live in washington state and hunting with a crossbow is banned unless your missing an arm. Don't think that I'm mad that you can do it and I can't and thats the reason I'm saying this. I'm just saying a crossbow is way way easier to use than a regular bow. Think about it you've got a scope and a stock on it like a rifle, it will definitely outshoot a regular bow at longer distances, and it can stay cocked all the time. I shoot both compound and recurve so from that statement you can see my questioning of a crossbow being used for the archery seasons.

RE: Monster Va. Buck

I hear you, its really not that accurate to tell you the truth. But, yes it is cocked all the time. I wish I hadn't sold my bow to a freind(I'm an idiot), I could probably have pulled them out of the woods with my compound. I harvested my first deer with a bow(an awesome 6 pt. in 92) but since then have hit, but not recovered 4 or 5 luckily nothing big. If I hit andcould'nt find this one I would of cried. There's a bunch of guyson the surrounding properties who I'm sure know this buck, you have to stay one step ahead of everyone else!!!

Also, there was like 5,000 car accidents in the small county of Fairfax,Va. Its mostly urban, bow only, back yard hunting. These are the counties were we really need to increases the deer harvest and if it helps get people in the woods I'm all for it!
Big Buck Dave
P.S. I would be more concerned about some statesbaiting laws, this causes CWD and takes the wild out of the hunt!!!

Congrats on the great buck.

I don't want to come off preachy, and this ismore of a general comment, than directed specifically at you,but one statement bothered me a little. "but since then have hit, but not recovered 4 or 5 luckily nothing big"

Bad hits happen, but you should never feel good about it just because it wasn't a big one. If it's good enough to release the arrow, it's good enough to do everything you can to find the animal. You won't always get 'em, but th effort should always be there.

Speaking of Fairfax County, this was my buck from Fairfax last year. Don't discount those little suburban woodlots!

I just got back. I had two doe under me this evening. I started back for the truck and a big deer(could'nt see rack, to dark) with its head held low walked from the woods to this shoulder high mullet/weed combination!

Here's his majesty, my awesome eight point from yesterday. What do you guys think? Notice how thick his neck is and man he was stinky!
Thanks and Good Luck,
Dave

Well, I don't use a crossbow, but I don't see a thing wrong with them. If it works, it works... I wonder if these guys use guns to hunt with? Don't worry about other people's opinions on that, everyone has their own value system, some just like to push their's onto others...

Congrats anyway... any deer taken is a trophy, whether it's a button, a 25 pointer, taken with a gun, crossbow, longbow, etc... if you worked for it, you earned it, end of story. But... that's JMHO. ;)

Thanks again. I'm going to try outback taxidermy. I usually use Pedro at J&P taxidermy, this will be my fourth time. You know I will probably switch back to a compound now that I've really slammed'em this year with the crossbow. I wanted to reallygetuse tothe sound of a release breaking the silance and the tear of a successful impact. The thrill of them running out of view(at least a couple did) and then hearing a crash and recovering them not far away. I'm really glad I found this web site, I can keep rambling on about the hunt after my budds get tired of my braggen.
