I decided to let my boy hold a deer last night

;)After I made her go night-night, of course! :D

My son has probably watched more deer hunting videos than most of his friends have watched Barney and Wiggles videos put together. Honest to goodness, his third word he spoke after "Mommy" and "Daddy" was "deer."

We went through a phase for several months where we would go get him out of his crib and he would start saying "deer... deer." He wanted to watch his deer videos so bad; I have no idea where he got that from.

Well, I was looking in the freezer a couple days ago and noticed we were starting to get extremely low on deer meat, so I decided to take the next mature doe which presented a good shot. I had already passed on several hoping that one of them would be leading a good buck past me, but it's just too darn early in the season for that to happen. I decided to go ahead and put one in the freezer because it won't be too much longer and that will start happening.

I got to my stand about three, and after a thirty minutes or so I grunted several times in all directions to see if I could pull anything out of the corn behind me or from the brush around me. About five minutes later, a nice little button buck came out to investigate the source of the sound, and ended up bedding down about 18 yards in front of me for almost an hour. He got up and walked past at about six yards, and I finally had a group of five come through, with a spike leading four does.

After determining there were no wallhangers laying back in the shadows, I drilled this one at 26 yards, the last of the group to come through. I will have to say I was extremely disappointed at the blood trail left by the 100-grain Muzzy. This is the first deer I've ever shot with anything other than a Rocket Aerohead, and I've been spoiled by the incredible blood trails left by those heads. The muzzy entered the doe in front of her left hip and blew out in the middle of her right side for a complete pass-through. The arrow itself was covered with bright red blood, but beyond that, there was none... and I mean none. None where she was standing, none along the route she ran, none where she fell. Luckily, I was able to watch her run the first 40 yards or so after the shot, and I found her by going to the spot I last saw her and scanning ahead.Isaw her white bellyanother 50 yards or so beyond that.

Hmmm... look like the linking to imagestation isn't working right now; I'll see if I can get the pics up soon.

Glad you recovered your deer. Sometimes there is so much fat it clogs the wound hole.

He's is a lucky boy...I always wanted to "pet" Bambi but I could never catch up to him and my Pappa didn't bow hunt!

Way to go MQ1!!!

Congratulations on being a positive responsibleinfluence on your son. It is the hardest and most enjoyable job one will ever have!

Oh, and congrats on the doe too, of course....:D

I hope you get another monster this year. [8D]

Little Matty's growing up fast!..........(He still has my hair color though;))

That's a great picture, and it's obvious that you're not doing any mental damage there.:D(Check him for ticks though) I thought he assisted in the recovery of your signature buck too?
I wish we could get my buddy Frank's kid more interested in animals beyond Scooby Doo and Nemo.

That's a fatty doe too. So what made you decide to switch to Muzzy from the trusted Rocket Miniblaster?
In fairness to the head, with the description of the shot, there's just too much fatty, gooky things to get a wound clogged up and if you don't get one of the arteries in the liver or stomach area they don't bleed that much from that type hit even though it's obviously quickly fatal.
Whenever you can take out 2 or more organs things aren't looking good for the animal shot.[:-]

I shot a buck 3 or 4 years ago almost in reverse of that shot, tucked fairly tight behind the shoulder and out in front of the hip and it was the same story, almost ZERO blood. A drop here, a drop there........and guess what that broadhead was?;)

You should have seen the blood trail from my doe Thursday night.[:o]YIKES. I was glad it rained the following day to clean the woods off a bit:D.

great doe.

i would have to agree with the above post. the muzzy broadhead is a head that others are compared to, really. all heads will kill a deer, but muzzy's design is just incredible with great results.

the shot that u describe is a little off target. it was a far back shot and anything can happen when u hit them back. one thing about a muzzy is the impact and pass through power....bone doesnt matter.

congrats.

Antler Eater, it is absolutely amazing what an incredible joy my son has been so far; I'm only looking forward to it getting better! I simply don't possess the vocabulary nor the writing ability to describe how amazing he is! He truly is a "daddy's boy." Maybe it was the six years of infertility challenges, I'm not sure... but I never could have imagined it being this much fun.

Great Job MQ, both with the boy and the doe.....nicely done.

I'd say the bloodtrail had to be from clogged holes, either fat at the exit wound and perhaps guts or matter in the entrance....did you take notice of any of that?

Congratulations.

Rob, the good thing about the head's performance was that it seemed to zip through so quickly it didn't pull anything with it... with that said, it also didn't appear to clog either the entry or exit hole. There wasn't any blood around either wound, even when I found her. I will say I'llreservecomplete judgementuntil I double-lung one, as this was a hard quartering away shot.
