Fisrt shot ever with a bow

I was out scouting a stateforest today at lunch. I came across what appeared to be a bedding area, and kicked up a deer while scouting. I decided to get out of there with the intention of going back tomorrow afternoon and on my way back to the car a turkey crosses the path in front of me. I walked up next to where she ctrossed to see 7 hens feeding 20 yds off the trail. I had my bow in the car, and I have necer gotten a turkey, so I quietly hurried back to the car to get my bow, make my way back and the hens are still feeding. Now my heart is pumping, I move in slowly to about 15 yds and draw, they must have heard me on the draw and started scurrying a bit, but one walks right in front of me at about 20 yds and stops right next to a tree. I released and WHACK, right into the darn tree! The hen didn't even flinch. I kinda laughed at myself, walked in to get my arrow, the turkeys scatter. Replaying the shot on my way back to the car I realized I didn't use my peep site at all. Dummy! Lesson learned!

Sorry for the long post. Congrats to everyone who scored today. On a side note, the bedding area I came across... I found no droppings, I am starting to doubt it was a bedding area. Has anyone come across bedding areas with no droppings?

Hey Boz!

Was it really windy or something? You must be a truly sneaky bastage to have slipped around that much on those hens, they're awfully wary! Congrats on the shot though! That's an accomplishment in and of itself!

I don't much think Farmer Brown is going to cotton to you sneak up on his domestic turkeys like that.[8D] We don't have turkeys like that anywhere I've hunted them. Those have got to be some awfully UNHUNTED ladies.

Well, I busted my first turkey with a bow today, a gobbler with a 10 1/2 inch beard. Stalked within 40 yards, caught a lucky break when something else spooked them and they decided to run down my throat. Zippered him at +/- 12 yards running straight at me. It was awesome, I will start a thread and post a pic if I can.

Congrats Critr-Gitr

There was a steady drizzle yesterday so the ground was wet and the rain was making noise on the leaves. Even after the shot though, when I walked in to get my arrow, the didn't fly off, they just moved on out of there. It was in a small area of state forest in CT. I don't think the area gets much hunting pressure.

Ahhh... Turkeys ain't always THAT wary. Did I ever tell you about the time I stopped to drain off some excess coffee? Had a turkey hen to bust out of the exact bush I'd picked to water, about 30 seconds into the process. Good thing I already had matters in hand or I would've wet myself.[:-][8D]

So, now I can honestly say I've found it easier to pee on a turkey than to get a shot at one with a bow. ;)Great job sneaking in on 'em like that, boz!

Replaying the shot on my way back to the car I realized I didn't use my peep site at all.
I think that happens in the heat of the moment to a lot more people than admit to it. Then, naturally, having never practiced shooting without sights they miss. One more good reason not to have sights on a hunting bow. :D

Posted the pic and story on 'first gobbler with a bow". I think it is already on page two, but it was a pretty good pic.
