Monster Buck...How do I get him??

On the piece of land I am hunting, there is an absolute monster of a buck, at least 12 points and a huge spread. I've seen him a few times, and so has my buddy that I hunt with, but never gotten a shot. My biggest concern is that either my buddy will get him or the buck will wander off my property and on to the adjacent property, and get shot there. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can increase my chances of seeing him first or how to keep him on my property? Thanks

Hunt carefully with the wind more than everyone else. Do you know his patttern or travel routes?

Like Tribal said. Plus if your hunting buddy is your friend you shouldn't worry if he get's it or not. I always hope my hunting buddy does well. It's part of being a good sport.

What Tribal said, but I think putting in the time isthe most important aspect! Good luck, you'll get a chance.

Don't get me wrong, motown, its not that i don't want my buddy to get him, its that i'm not sure if he could kill him if he got the shot ;)....and in reply to tribal...yeah i know where he lays EVERY morning. The problem is, it is a very small patch of woods, and walking in spooks him up every time.
any thoughts?

Have you sat back and scoped him to see what trails he uses to enter and exit his bedding? Make note of wind direction, approximate time, etc. Use this info to your advantage. Hopefully you can get him returning from feeding or when he gets up around sunset. But do your homework.

the thing is, he won't leave the woods, i don't know if he doesn't feel pressured, or what but he'll just zig zag the opposite way you do, i've never seen him leave the woods, just go into a cornfield, which as you know is basically impossible to do anything at that point

How big is the woods Timmy? There has to be a way to sneak in.

Whatever you do, stay down wind and don't spook him out of the area. As the rut approaches he'll make more mistakes. Take your time and learn what you can.

If he's bedding down there every morning, I would be camped out all night in a tree!!!

All I can give for advice is watch your scents, check your wind direction, and get out there!

think of it as a science. you've got to study him and figure his patterns out quick. you only have about 2-3 weeks before he goes into rut and may end up halfway acoss the county. now while you're keeping an eye on him keep your distance and dont spook him. best way to figure him out is to get a map and label everywhere he's been seen and when. also spotting at night occasionally will let you know his patterns a little better. good luck.

Can you and your buddy tag team him?
One of you set up to where he always runs to and try to get a shot off that way? Sort of a mini deer drive?

Another trick I've read of before is both of you enter together and when you spook him up have one of you stop and hunker down, the other continues on and the buck (on paper anyways) will circle back to his original position while keeping his attention on the walker.

There should be a rub line or a couple rublines in the woods where he is bedding. You can tell which direction he is traveling by looking at these rubs. He is coming from the bald/rubbed side of the tree. Probably coming from the corn in the morning. Get in there early, close to the rub lines, maybe a scrape or two along the rub lines. Rub lines are mostly present just inside the woods 30yds or so, or where there is some sort of transition likeOak to Pine or a strip of smaller trees inside the woods. Set up here with the wind coming from the corn in the morning. If you can make a all day hunt out of it, bring water, food, and a pee bottle. The longer you spend on this stand the better your chances of catching him traveling. If you sit all day the wind in the afternoon wont matter because your ground scent will have dissipated to almost nothing. Hunt high, 18-25ft, this will keep your scents up and out of the woods. If you can't sit all day stay at least till 10am. Big bucks start making good rubs and checking scrape nowand they take a little more time coming to bed. If you return for an afternoon hunt start early and make sure the wind is blowing to the corn. He may get up early and be browsing on acorns. Hope this helps.
