Do you ever have "one of those" seasons?
Well, I got to hunt this past weekend for the first time all year. Finally got to go home for our school's fall break. I hunted Saturday morning and Monday morning and here's how the weekend went.
Saturday morning it was cool...I went out to my stand and "food plot" but lo-and-behold there's not a single blade of oats or winter wheat that came up out there. Straight dirt. That's encouraging for sure. Well...anyways... I had one deer come in. He hung around for about 30 minutes...a spike. WARNING RANT: Okay, that's the thing, before this stupid "3 point rule" there was a good sized 8-10 point killed off of my stand every few years. Since the rule has come into effect, I have seen numerous bucks. Probably 5 spikes, two or three 3 points, and a 4 point. Where'd all the quality deer go? Oh...they are getting shot young, not reaching mature age, and the stupid inferior gened bucks are breeding all of my does. Anyways, that is that. I had a fun time watching him anyways. So...since there is no food plot to bring deer in, I had to change strategies. I moved my corn feeder to a different spot and filled it with corn. I also put out a "secret ingredient" which I'll mention sometime later if it works, and if it doesn't I don't wanna look like a yahoo for trying it. I moved a ladder stand I had to another spot where I believe some deer are bedding every day. I also put up my game cam. So when I go home for thanksgiving, I'll check it. So I went out for the last time yesterday morning. I sat in the stand for awhile, had nothing happen (though I did almost have a squirrel hop on top of my head, but he decided to keep his distance above me (about a foot.)) I got down off the stand and went to hunt an open area a little ways off. Well, I saw two does while I was sitting there. Of course they were outta range but at least I saw deer. So after sitting there for about an hour I heard a "buzzing" sound by my head. I figured it was a fly or mosquito. Well, it landed on my eyelid and BAM!!! A dadgum hornet decided to sting my eye. While I was screaming and grabbing my eye another one decided to stick a stinger in my right hand. Well by this time I'd had enough I got up, ran about 20 yards, all the time flaling my arms and swinging my hat at buzzing hornets. Don't know if I'd decided to sit down about a nest or if they just found me and didn't like my presence. Needless to say, that was the end of my hunt (because I wanted it to be, not to mention, it's hard to get deer to come in when yelling, and flaling arm movement has occured." I took a nap once I got home for a few hours and woke up to a completely swollen right eye. (Did I mention that I'm allergic to stings?) So yeah, that's how my world of hunting went this weekend, but I do have some good news. When I got back home (to Springfield) I had a response letter in the mail giving me permission to hunt some property. Hit em hard. Happy hunting! |

Wow Fro, and I thought I had bad luck. At least you have the rest of the season.
