Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
So I decided to make a a mock scrape on a trail only 100 yards from our cabin.
I made the scrape at 2pm last Tuesday. At 5:30pm, this guys stops by. ![]() and over the next 2 days, I had a a dozen pictures featuring few button bucks and 4-5 doesas well. (6 of the 12 pictures were during daylight!) ![]() Then on Thursday night, at 7:30 pm, this nice buck (a shooter to me) stopped by the scrape. ![]() I refreshened the scrape on Friday afternoon, and when I checked the game camera on Sunday afternoon, I had another 16 photos, including 3 of a different small buck using the scrape! (I didn't pull the memory card yet however) I have a stand behind the camera at about 20 yards, so I might need to sit there once or twice, to see what action it gets. UPDATED 10/20/05: MORE BUCKS AT THE SAME SCRAPE a little guy ![]() a bigger 8 point ![]() ![]() the next morning he comes back ![]() then another little guy ![]() then this big boy shows up this morning, while I was only 250 yards away! ![]() EDITED Monday 10/24/2005 to add: So after the big boy above came in, this little guy showed up that morning. ![]() then that evening this two bucks came buy within minutes of each other. ![]() ![]() Later that night, this respectable buck came in. Then on 10/21/2005 these guys came to visit. ![]() and right behind him was this guy ![]() and later that morning was this little buck (small spike it appears) ![]() Next was Saturday 10/22/05 early in the morning comes ![]() I walked past the mock scrape at 4pm, and laid a scent trail leaving the mock scrape until I got to my stand 200 yards away. The buck below showed up at my stand at 6pm, and was a close as 7 yards head down quartering away, but I decided to pass him, knowing that bigger bucks are in the area. I hope I don't regret passing up such an easy shot. ![]() then that night ![]() Finally on Sunday, this buck returned early in the morning. ![]() and finally this button buck stopped by to check things out. (I have another photo in the sequence showing he is a button buck, but I like this picture better) Because of all the pictures, I am not posting any of the DOES pictured at the scrape. each day at least 1 doe visits the scrape also. |

Awesome pics!! My favorite trailcam pics are alway of bucks at scrapes!
|
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
i tried the same thing, but i don't think anything ever came to it:(....nice deer though!
|
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
I put my camera on some scrapes but I own a digital Stealth Cam so it wont get any pictures, but it makes me feel better about hanging a $400 tree decorating device up than not using it at all. Hope you get some good pics over the scrapes.

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Hey Dampland. What kind of scent are you using in the scent dripper. First buck looks interested in it as I'm sure the rest were. Were the bucks tearing the scrape up themselves. Thanks. Interested to know if you don't mind divulging any of your secrets.:D

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
I used "Active Scrape" scent in the dripper. On the licking branch, I poured some 2004 left over Tink's 69.
I also wear rubber boots and rubber gloves when setting up the scrape, and I use a stick to rework the scrape each time I check it. (Makes it easier to see the tracks in the dirt.) The big buck did refreshen the scrape, since he was the last photo before I checked it, and the scrape was scraped clean of leafs when I checked it. I am going to change the setting on that camera to take 2 pics before resting for 2 minutes. I hope to have more pictures next Sunday, when I come back from the hunting land. |
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Thanks for the reply. And nice looking deer. I am using the same setup but no sign of bucks in my area yet. Usually don't drop byuntil closer to the rut as we have a good number of does roaming through our woods. I have had the dripper in the same spot for a little over a week now and will move it to a different location this week near another trail. I've tried some slight rubs with a pruning saw too with no luck. Anyway, I think the scent is less than $12 for a 4 oz bottle and should last about a month. So it's cheap enough to experiment with for awhile.Good luck to you.

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
We have a ton of does on our property. Our records seem to indicate a 15 doe to 1 buck ratio, which I already know is waaaay out of whack.
I try to make my mock scrapes in areas where the earth is really "potting soil" like in texture. It seems to hold the scent better than sandy or clay areas. Also, a licking branch is a MUST. I'm certainly no expert, but I have been making mock scrapes for about 4 years now, and I would say that about 3 out of the 5 I make each year are freshened multiple times by bucks. I have also noticed, that a TON of does/button bucks stop at scrapes. Good Luck! |
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Thanks for the advice. Will take it. I had to nail a licking branch and one for the dripper on and will in most cases. Sounds like our area. I have seen some big bucks these past few years but the does are a common occurrence, which is definitely a nice thing.

THAT IS FREAKIN AWESOME! THAT GIVES ME AN IDEA!

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
One more question Dampland. How far off the trails do you put your scrapes?
|
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
ORIGINAL: chucker34 One more question Dampland. How far off the trails do you put your scrapes? I always put my mock scrapes right on a logging or 4 wheeler trail, or on a major deer trail. I also make the scrape as big as a trash can lid, or bigger. I want the deer to notice it from far away, and come investigate. |

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Man those are some great pics. Good and clear.
What kind of trail camera do you use. I want to buy one to replace my digital stealth cam (junk), and I would sure like to know what that one is. |
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
This all begs the question - Where is Mr. Dampland during all this action? Could he be tucked away in the comfortable confines of his La-Z-Boy Recliner, or snuggled up next toMrs. Damplandin their luxurious Memory Foam mattress (engineered by NASA)?? Hmmmm....
I'm just jerkin' your chain - cool pictures - thanx for posting. |
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Diesel77 you have me LMAO:D:D:D
oh nice pics by the way |
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Did you use active scrape doe in heat scent or what? Thanks.
|
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Really nice pics. Good luck with that nice buck.

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
That is sweet, looks like youve got a dandy visiting it in daylight hours too!
I bought two that Im going to setup this weekend and maybe get the trail cam on one of them. The one of them came with Active scrape scent and says to fill it no more then 1 1/4 OZ full. How do you know when to stop so you dont go over this mark? I noticed the Scrape bottle is 4 OZ itself. |
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
any updated pics yet? Those are some awsome pics with great bucks!

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Cornfed,
Plastic shot glasses work wonderful to measure one ounce. Just make sure you have the ONE ounce glass. I have seen some that are 1.5 and 3.0 also. Here is a link to show you what I mean. The ones in the link are 1.5 oz glasses but have a 1.0 oz fill line.I know for a fact you can find them cheaper than this though. http://cgi.ebay.com/300-1-5-ounce-plastic-shot-glass-1-oz-fill-line_W0QQitemZ7555112368QQcategoryZ11875QQssPageNa meZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |

Nice pics....good luck getting that buck!

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Great pics!
I use dominate buck scent on my early mock scrapes. It appears the local bucks get upset a new buck is on their land..so they take over that scrape..then add a few of their own VERY close to that one. Early November, I switch to an estrous scent...then use my estrous waffers on the tree's around my stand. Works like magic. I have never made a mock scrape that had no action in it. They work wonders! |
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
man that is amazing...can someone take me through a step by step way to do that. i would like to try it here and see if it works. i will pick up a few of those drippers in the morning. i had one and left it in the woods a while back:)

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Where rubber boots and gloves (even though I've had great results w/o the gloves...but I always where rubber boots).
Grab a stick and make a round'ish clearing on the ground..under a low hanging branch (I like the branch to be from middle chest level to just above my head. I've even used my rubber boots to kick away leaves, branches..and roots in the scrape. Use one of the many attractants out there. "Active Scrape" gets good results..and you can even get a bottle in the same package as the "Dripper Bag" in most stores. Personally, I don't use the bag..or Active Scrape too often. I just refreshen the scrape every time I go out hunting...and even spray the scent around the scrape too. I've used "Lickin' Stick" gel on the "licking branch" above the scrape...doesn't seem to add to the results any. Just keep the scrape free of debris..and you're all set. Heck, I know a guy who whips it out and pisses on mock scrapes instead of buying scents...and he gets results as well. |

I'm just jerkin' your chain - cool pictures - thanx for posting. Sorry, no "Mrs. Dampland" .....yet. I have been hunting in the area, but the only stand near this scrape needs a south Wind, so I haven't been able to hunt it. However Saturday, I hunted in a stand about 150 yards from the mock scrape, and I saw 4 bucks, including letting a 8-pointer walk, that got within 7 yards. I have video of it, which I will try to post the link here soon. |

I might have to start making mock scrapes with all them deer coming to them like that. Thanks for sharing the pics.

RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
Those are obviously very good pics. Needs to be an advertisement for Wildlife Research. Question, how are you getting so many good quality pics on your post all under 100kb? Special software. I use Paint Shop and Photoshop and I cannot get them compressed like you do.
Please let me know! Sincerely, Chris |
RE: Mock Scrape Action w/ Pics
I use Adobe Photoshop, and played with it quite a bit this weekend figuring out how to post pictures of my gobbler. Open the picture you want, then go to file, then save for web. When that screen comes up you can change options. I used jpeg format. Go down to the image size in pixels, change the top one to 600 or so, the bottom will change automatically as long as the box below is checked appropriately. There will also be a box that tells you the current image size in kb, you can watch the numbers change as you make changes. Just remember, the size of the file in kb is dependant on 2 things, the resolution, and the physical size of the image on your screen. The smaller you make the image, the more room is left for higher resolution. When you are ready hit apply, save the photo under a different name, and you should be good to go. I am no computer guru, but if you have trouble I will try to help.
