RE: Why the Hatred towards Coyotes?
I hate them because they reak havoc on quail and rabbit populations in my area and also because they kill a lot of pets that are left to run free. They kill chickens, calves, deer fawns, turkey clutches and anything else that they can kill. They kill animals and just eat the guts or hindquarters and then kill another. They are vermonous little killers and I shoot everyone of them that I get the chance to. As stated above, they have no natural enemies so I am just doing my part and I figure some of yall are slacking so I am doing your part too<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
The only way I really like to shoot coyotes is when I am by myself or when I am with someone.

I'll echo silentassasin & add pheaseants...
Here in SD we've got a TON of pheasants and 10 TONS of coyotes - and we shoot every one we can. It's not illegal, and there are no other predators to keep them in check.
Back home (northern MN) TimberWolves are getting to be much more common than coyotes (locals call 'em brush wolves). The MN DNR is downplaying the #'s of TW's but the hunters see them & the NW MN farmers are losing stock to them - kept unchecked these supreme predators can do tremendous damage
Aim small miss small

Trapper Dave, your facts are a little misleading. Deer densities are higher now, but much of the reason people notice more deer is due to human expansion. The more people expand into the deers' range, the more they adapt, and the more human/deer interaction is seen. As far as coyotes effects on deer population, the yearling mortality rate in ranges where there is signifantly more coyotes was 5 times that of areas with lower numbers of coyotes. Another interesting fact is that the buck to doe ratios were much worse (more does than bucks) in the ranges with more coyotes. It is theorized that this is due to the strain put on bucks in those areas from the rut followed by the PA rifle hunting season making bucks weaker and thus easier targets for the yotes. Granted some of those bucks were taken during the rifle season, but areas that higher numbers of coyotes showed more bucks being lost through the winter months. I wish I could find my notes from class on this, but I have moved 3 times since college and thought I would never use that data again so it's probably gone, but I'll look anyway.

I hear what you all are saying,I agree with some of it.lets keep this topic going. I can only relate to you my personal experiences. We were losing quite a few calves a couple years ago, lots of coyotes in Indiana, figured that was the problem till I caught 3 dogs from down the road in the act of actually pulling a half born calf out of its mother.

Like someone said, the lack of fur trade and money, means less population check. All DNR departments feel they have a profound effect on a number of game animals. While having no coyotes is no answer either, keeping the population in a given area to its sustainable and manageable numbers is essential. I don't hate coyotes, I don't respect them either...they are scavangers and will do what is neccessary to survive. That being said they have worth in the wild. Too many they become destructive and the worth drops.
I shoot them when the chance is their and it doesn't disrupt my hunt. I will not however shoot them just to kill. I think their are people who just like to kill, face it! Some of these same people will harbour or demonstrate hate. I guess nature of the beast, sort to speak.
