what do you set your bow at?

i hear talk from a guy at a archery shop in hanson MA. that their is no need to set your bow at 70lbs. he says 50lbs is really all you need for shots out to 30yds.
my cousins husband said last year he has his set at 47lbs and he takes 3 deer a year during the maine hunting season.
i have no problems pulling back a bow that is 70lbs but is there really a need for 70lbs?

60 lbs, an incredibly long draw length (im 6'6") and 75% letoff. Ive pulled up to 90, but dont feel the need for anything more than 60 for deer.

65# weight, 65% letoff, 30" draw length. It's an older PSE Centerflite (lefty model) that I got off Ebay. I had it thoroughly checked out by a shop when they got it setup with sights, rest, etc...

My Q2 is set at 57 lbs. It's not too difficult to pull 70 lbs, but there is a good chance that you will have to hold it for quite a while before you actually get the shot. Whatever works for you.

I shot 70# ever since I started bowhunting until I tried my friends MQ1 set at 60#. I put 60# limbs on my PSE Durango and I could hold along time without shaking.

31" Draw length, 72#, 65% letoff. I'm comfortable with that draw weight in any situation/position even sitting down. I wouldn't mind shooting less but it may help in the event of an iffy shot, like in the shoulder.

Martin Jaguar Magnum set at 60# with 29"draw. I like to be able to hold at full draw for an extended period of time if necessary.

I have my Q2 set at 70, I find that it shoots flater at 70lbs. I had it at 58lbs and it was fine. I didn't crank it up for the speed or KE, I just like how it brought my 20, 30, and 40 yard pins closer together. Seems to me that if your 20, and 30 yard pins are closer together there is less room for error when deciding where to place the pin on those "in between shots".

Uncle ted shoots with his bow in the 40's, around 200 fps. I have watched him shoot plenty of pass throughs with this set up.

Parker Stealth Hunter set at 66lbs 30" draw. I use to pull 80lbs but my shoulders just couldn't take it anymore. I think the only difference in the 80 and the 66 is how deep the shaft sticks in the dirt after a pass through on a deer. I'm sure there's more KE from the 80lbs but the 66lb is plenty of me and doesn't hurt my shoulders to pull it.

RE: what do you set your bow at?

I have been shooting 70#'s for several years, but only because I prefer a little more than 60 due to my short draw length (28") and I like to have my limbs all the way down to maximize performance. I am waiting for my new bow to come in with 65# peak weight limbs which should be a perfect match for me.

I shoot a Mathews SQ2 set at 68lbs. 27 inch draw 70% let off. I am using the Trophy Taker drop away rest and 27 inch Gold Tip XT 5575. I like the way it shoots but am thinking about moving the lbs. down to about 60-62 so that I can hold it longer. It is important that you can hold it back and ensure that you get your pin on the animal without shaking so bad.

RE: what do you set your bow at?

I guess it comes down to "Shoot the Highest weight you can draw comfortably"......if you CAN draw a certain weight easily then why lower your performance by shooting a lower weight just to shoot a lower weight.
I know in a perfect world you may not need the extra 10 or 20#'s of draw weight, but shoulder blades, spines, and ribs aren't really a perfect world.......
I shoot 70#'s on all my hunting bows because that's what I feel comfortable with......bonus that I'm getting some extra usable energy.
If you can draw a certain weight in odd positions, cold, under pressure and hold on target for a minute or 2 if you have to, then by all means that's the weight to be shooting.
Don't handicap yourself because you "Probably don't REALLY need it".

RE: what do you set your bow at?

Lightweight bows can handle whitetails quite effectively. But, if you can handle more draw weight without a loss in accuracy, you have the primary advantage of being able to shoot a heavier arrow for more penetration and the secondary advantage of getting a flatter trajectory. My own bow this season draws 65# @ my 25" draw. I have two sets of arrows...620 grain primary hunting arrows and 800 grain engine block tamers that I plan to use when hunting in close quarters. I have other bows I may switch hit with that draw 70# and 60#...depending on how cold it gets. :^)
