The nerve of some hunters!!

I was out hunting in my usual place Saturday morning, when I arrived back at the Jeep I found a note in the wiper. Following is the note..

You are parked and walking in on the deer trail. Could you please find another place to park and access your hunting area. Signed by the guy.

At first I was thinking, well maybe...but he more I got to thinking about, the more mad I became. I have beenhunting this area for over 10 years and have parked in the same place all 10 years. I have watched numerous deer and nice bucks walk within 20 yards of my truck. The land that I hunt is land locked on 3 sides and open field all the way across the side that is along the road. The timber itself is over 1/3 of a mile across this corn field. The only other way in is to walk through a bedding area and then through the entire timber. I do have stands on the other end of the property, and when I hunt those I do park in a different spot.

Now here is the part of the story that makes me mad. This guy is a known trophy hunter. He hasn't hunted in 5 years, since he wounded a 160" class deer. During the last 5 years he drives up and down the road that the deer cross all the time going 5 mph (driving within 5 ft of my truck)at sunrise or within 1/2 hour of sunrise. I have watched numerous deer, from does to 150" bucks turn and run back to the timber they were coming from because he was sitting in the road. He hunts (and I use the term loosly) the property next to us and it isn't nothing to see him driving around the field in the wee hours of morning, still dark enough to have his lights on(during his off years). Or even parking in the middle of the field just to watch deer. Now since he is hunting this year, he found it necessary to place a stand within 50 yards of one of ours in perfect viewing distance.

Later Saturday morning I was talking to my good buddy, who hunts about 7 miles away, and told him about the note. He couldn't believe it and said that guys was on his list also. The guys family owns property that borders my buddies place and he found it necessary that morning to go and drive the border of the property. Needless to say he drove within 50 yards of my buddy at 10 minutes after sunrise. He knows that my buddy is a die hard and that he is out every weekend. They have talked on numerous occasions and he knows this.

As far as I am concerned this guys has not shown any respect to other hunters and is only concerned with himself. He had no balls, leaving a note on my truck. He lives 1/4 mile from our hunting spot and I guarantee he watches us walk out to make sure we don't cross the fence at all, he should have came and talked to us face to face. I know it may be small on my part, but I am not going to change the way I hunt or where I park just because he decided it was his year to hunt.

What do you guys think.

If he doesn't own the land you're hunting on I wouldn't change a thing. I'd also let the landowner know about the situation just in case something should come up.

If your legal there is nothing he can do. The only thing I would do different is park closer to his stand if at all possible.[8D]

I think there is many sides to this.

1st The guy has some balls. He wrote he name down.

2nd If the deer cross 20 yards from your truck.I would not park there.

3rd I dont walk in on deer trails at all.I normaly take the least used[by the deer]way in.

4th The guy that drives less than 50 yards from your friends stand sucks.I would move my stand,or would have never put it in a spot where ANY one could drive by.

I do however think any one that puts a stand up close to some one elses stand is not much of a hunter.I would leave my stand there, hope that he hunts it the same day I do,Than I would stand up in my stand and PEE in his direction.I bet he would never put a stand around you.

I'm assuming you are hunting on private property. Regardless of whether you are on private or public property, unless you are on his property, I would ignore it and/or tell him to F off. You said this guy hasn't hunted in five years. Is it because he violated some game laws and had his privledges rescinded? If that's so, you might want to let the GW know where this guy is to make sure that he is being watched. ;)

People like that irk me. I would fill my tag and then watch for when he is hunting and drive up and down the road honking my air horn. Wouldn't help the situation any but I would sure feel better.

I know a land owner (not personally) here in Iowa that has 1000 acres he bought just for hunting. He lives outside the state and flies in during deer season. He pays a bunch of inbred hillbillies to trespass on other peoples property and drive the deer onto his. I have seen great herds of deer on his property and yet to him that is not enough.

That is another reason timber land is so expensive in Iowa. We're known to have monster bucks so out of state big wigscome in here and pay more than the property is normally worth to get the land. We also have rich people offering to lease hunting rights from farmers. Can't blame the farmers for wanting/needing the extra income. Neighbor got offered 10K per year to lease the rights to his 200 acres. He turned them down when he heard from other farmers how these guys will go in and shoot livestock and trample the crops.

RE: The nerve of some hunters!!

I would confront him with the note and ask him, "Whats the problem"?
Then I would ask him," Did you see my stand when you set yours up"?
I would let him know that his stand is too close and to move it before someone accidently gets shot, since yours was there first.
If need be, even flappin up some dust might be the ticket, providing no one esle is around.

In my state hunter harrassment is a crime and the F&W officers will ticket anyone who interferes with a hunt. Sounds like the guy has taken the easy road. I wouldn't show him any respect. Put a note on his window and tell him road hunting is a pretty lazy way to hunt.

For one thing yer title is off cause this guy and I use guy loosely is not a hunter at all. He sounds more like a azzhole to me. If he had the nerve to leave a note then maybe he should have confronted you face to face unless he knows better. I say pizz on him and just keep doing what yer doin cause as long as yer legal there ain't a flipping thing he can do. Maybe you should leave a little scent of yer own closer to that stand you can see if you know what I mean.

Some people shouldn't have the right to be called hunters.

If he is not hunting there what difference does it make to him?
So what If your doing everything wrong? Not that your are or anything,
Why does he care? I do believe I would have to stop him the next time I see him and ask. Then kindly ask him to not put anything else on my jeep.

RE: The nerve of some hunters!!

The guy has done nothing illegal. And there is no way to get a harrassment to stick. He is driving a public road and is on property he has permission to. He hasn't hunted in 5 years only because he wounded a monster years ago.

The part that pisses with me the most is he is wanting some common respect but is yet to dish any out. He claims the deer cross right there, yet there is nothing that makes them cross there. It is all open field. They cross anywhere within that mile of road, trust me..I have seen them. The empty vehicle at the road does not slow them down. They walk right by it. But when it is putting down the road and stopping to check the deer out, they turn and run. The only advantage I can see with him hunting is he won't be driving up and down the roads.

And the other thing is a note. I drive by his house a minimum of 2 times per hunt. It wouldn't be to hard to flag me down while I drive by.

I think there is many sides to this.

1st The guy has some balls. He wrote he name down.

2nd If the deer cross 20 yards from your truck.I would not park there.

The answer to 2 & 3... Just as above. Open field, when the deer decide to cross, they don't care where it is, they just go.

And to #4... Having a stand 30 yards off the field edge that is half a mile to the nearest road isn't usually where anybody drives except for a combine or tractor.

I won't do anything to try and mess up his hunting, but I sure as heck am not going to help him out.

I guess I was just needing to vent a little more.

IL bow man
Do not take me roung I do not know all the facts.

I have left notes and allso talked to many guys about where they park and walk in.Allso here in MT there is many many people that camp right in the feeding spots for elk.I should state here that I walk extra far down a road any time I hunt in or by a crossing. Many people do not do this.I know it is my right to park way away just as it is there right to park close.

The guy that wrote you the note left his name. From this I get he thinks he is trying to help you or at least better his odds on killing a deer.Every one is banging on the guy for leaving a note.Maby he is just a big pain in the butt.

As my 1st line states IL bow man dont take this roung. If the deer are walking righ by your truck at 20 yards youmay be spooking some deer when you park and walk in.[as stated I do not know all facts]

I do not like the people that drive around and look at deer/elk from the road. But I do know if it bugs the deer you may be to close to the roadwith your stand. If he drives areound HIS land and spooks the deer you are hunting. You may be to close to his land.[I know you can hunt right up to your line] It is just if he keeps driving by you or youe friend some times it is best to move. The deer will.

As for the stand placement. It is a crock of crap. For no reason at all should he place a stand this close to yours. Is your stand a hangon or one built in the tree?

I just don't understand how certain people can demand certain respect, but not give it in return... and I'm talkin' respect for animals here. Respect their trail, you can't park there because I want to DRIVE there!![:@] What a fool.

I have had problems with disrespect too. Dang yin yin's rippin' through the woods on a consistent basis... finally my hubby called the land owner and said "hey man, we'll pay you a few hundred if you keep them out until December!" Land owner called us and told us he told them to stay the H-E-double hockey sticks out. What is WRONG with people, I just don't get it.

I say park where you were, if you have had successful hunts during the 10 years you have been hunting this than to heck with that idiot! He is only out for his best interest with no care or concern for yours. As a hunter, I wish the best of luck to all fellow hunters, he should be the same way... there's plenty of deer out there to go around.

RE: The nerve of some hunters!!

Ignore him. If you have the chance meeting face to face and he mentions it, tell him "And you're spooking all the deer from us by wandering and driving around at first light". If he doesn't mention it, just ignore it. It just isn't worth getting all bent out of shape about. You know, he's got a lot of nerve. I had a guy that tried that one time only he tried posting some State land behind a farmers field. So my buddy sets up right on a posted sign. The guy shows up at about 9 AM ranting and raving. When he finally stopped talking my buddy ask him who he was, "Is your name New York"? The guy stammered and said he was trying to keep the out of staters from hunting. My buddy said, you mean like my buddy from Maryland that's 100 yards further into "YOUR" posted land. Chuck called me on the radio. I told him to tell the guy we figured we'd just call the state and report him. The guy moved on and we tore down his posted signs. The idiot didn't own ANY land around there. He just tried to flim flam a whole ridge top for himself.

YOU kNOW>... I"M mad as HE!!. I think you should call this idiot and tell him not to be messing with your truck or posting notes on it or in any way interfer with your hunting. Tell him it's the perfect access to the area you're hunting. You've been doing it for 10 years. Tell the damn "ROAD HUNTER" to find another trail to ride by. I suspect the guy is whacking them from the road with some small caliber weapon. I don't care if he's the Trophy Hunter of all Trophy hunters or a flathead expert. He's got a lot of nerve. Chances are he's seen a big one in the area and is trying to run people out.... OR... he's trying to get you to drive out the thickets and bedding areas so you'll push something his way. Now that I'd say is a great possibility.

Every one is banging on the guy for leaving a note.
A note is fine, I have no problems with the note and he even signed it. OK, so I do have a small problem. He lives within 1/3 of a mile from where we park. Not to hard to stop us sometime. That would be my only problem.

I do not like the people that drive around and look at deer/elk from the road. But I do know if it bugs the deer you may be to close to the roadwith your stand.
As stated, I have a 1/3 of a mile walk back to my stand across open field. The deer leave another property, cross the road and head across the open field to our timber.

As for the stand placement. It is a crock of crap. For no reason at all should he place a stand this close to yours. Is your stand a hangon or one built in the tree?
Our stand is a hang on that has been placed in the same tree for 6 or 7 years.

My whole thing with this would be a common respect thing. He has had no respect for our hunting for the last 5 years, so he won't gain any of my respect.

This is an unlikely scenerio for every day. I WOULD suspect the guy is telling you like it is, the buck will cross from brush to brush 99 percent of the time. They don't usually expose themselves to walking across a wide open field during daylight hours near a road. The deer probably DO prefer to cross near your truck. In fact, you've said you've seen them do it all the time. You might be better off parking the other side of the field, walking down the road and hunt the trail crossing closer to the road. Much easier to pin them down where they're restricted.

LI bow man

I have left many notes.for many reasion. If I lived right there I would come talk to you not leave a note. Most of mine are left on public land.I have a ton of time[or make] to scout places to hunt.So there is lots of times I will know where or how a animal will go.I do not lie to them and normaly tell them the very best place to go and kill it.But if they talk crap to me I leave them alone and keep an eye on the animal. He will change his pattern.

As for your stand I ask to see if it was there all the time.Knowing it is not there all year.He is a jack for placing his stand there.I would not be real nice.I MAY EVEN PLACE A NOTE ON HIS TRUCK. :}

No need for an unwanted confrontation, but I would just ask the guy, "Man, why did you feel the need to put a note on my jeep?" Acknowledge the note and move on. You've got a big buck to kill for us, baby!!

Good luck to ya and hope this guy doesn't get to you...I'm pissed off for ya.
