Hunting a bad wind direction?
 

What do you do when you are faced with a stand where there is NO favorable wind direction? The deer could come from all directions. And other than a helicopter drop off, your entrance route could blow scent to deer regardless of direction.

Also what do you do when the wind changes on you? For example I was hunting a stand with supposedly a north wind. Well it blew from the north for the 1st half hour of light, then proceeded to blow every direction, but from the north after that. What do you do?

Starting this year I am trying to play the wind more. In the past, I didnt really pay much attention to wind and was still successful in seeing and harvesting deer. I just try to be scent free as possible. Thats all you can do sometimes. I've had deer smell me and stick around for a while, long enough for a shot.

I had a situation like that on Saturday morning. Seemed like every 10 min the wind was blowing a different direction. All I did was the usual. Tried to be as scent free as possible and check the wind more frequently so that I know what way my scent is blowing. I did happen to see only 1 deer that morning and sure enough he was directly down wind of me but never spooked or winded me.

The only winds that I hate and are not anygood for any stand are Eastern winds. When they are out of the east ther more than likely will be no feast. Not sure how it is in other states but East winds in Wi suck.

Winds out of the east indicate a storm is blowing in. Usually with east winds the sky will be red in the morning. The old sailors adage of "Red Sky at Night, Sailors delight. Red Sky in morning, Sailors take Warning." is pretty much true. If there is a red sunrise and winds are out of the east there is one heckova storm brewing.

Try to be as scent conscious as possible...carbon suit, scent eliminating hygience and clothing products, etc... You cannot play every angle.

It's good to hear I'm not the only one who feels that way! I made the mistake of going out this last saturday with a northeast wind , figured if I sat the edge of a bedding area it might be different. Nope , I saw 2 doe get up and start browsing about 15 minutes before dark.

Everytime the bad winds blow and I figure I'm better than I am......I loose.[:'(][:'(] The swirling winds are the worst. There's no way to win. Get down and go spend some time with the family. Collect some "Nice Guy" points from the little woman and save yourself for another day. If I'm determined, sometimes you just concede half the woods. Just figure nothing is coming from that direction because you stunk it up. Still keep an occasional eye out but for the most part it isn't going to happen. In moments of brillance, I've just gotten down and moved to another stand. Anytime I figure the winds have screwed me, it seems the winds have screwed me. We all know better than to persist but sometimes just force the issue anyway and just end up waisting time.

Is thisin/near a food sourceor a travel route set up relatively far from a food/bedding area? If it's a food stand, I would be tempted to leave it alone period.Polluting feeding areas only lasts so long before they're onto you. If it's some sort of travel route, I would put it on the backburner till "buck chase doe" time and try it. If there's any time of the year that a pestered doe will lead buck right into danger just trying to get away from him, that's the time.
