a request to stop all hunting stories

My boss has requested that I ask all you fine folks to stop posting your hunting stories on this website until after 4pm est Friday, something about "decline productivity". He asks that you agian refrain from your posts starting on monday morning at 7:30 am. It seems I just cant get anything done here at work with hunting seasons starting up all over the country, while I still have over a week to go. Until I can join you in the woods, good luck, and keep the stories coming.

Fortunantly for me I am like the Maytag washing machine repairman, all I do is answer an occasional question on the phone and monitor the systems, when something goes wrong I work. Come on Saturday!!!!!

RE: a request to stop all hunting stories

I really cant complain, I am a GIS Specialist (I make maps for a living) and I have spent the last three weeks superimposing all of my stand locations over a seamless, color aeriel photograph. It is all computerized so I can link to a database that I created that has information such as huntible wind direction, sighting info etc. And so long as its a map on my computer screen everyone thinks am working!

I know exactly what you mean. It wasn't a problem when I first stumbled across this forum because things were pretty slow around here & there was nothing else to do. But now they actually expect me to get some work done. Can you believe these people?
This place is way too addicting.

LOL, MA_bwhntr, me too on the GIS job. I have all my places mapped out. Aerial photos etc etc. Using ArcView.

RE: a request to stop all hunting stories

Todd,
We use Arview 3.2, ArcInfo 8.2, all the Extensions plus a pile of Autodesk software. My stand_location.apr is in 3.2. Its has a half meter color orthorectified mosaic image as a base, with a point file that has attributes for all the stuff I mentioned earlier. Simple stuff, if I could only link it to the National Weather Service I could let it pick my stand locations for me.........dare to dream. Who says we've gotten too high tec

I don't get to check out the forum at work cause I'm on the road, but my wife has the same problem your boss does. They just don't understand.

I second that emotion, can't wait. Went down to get a doe permit yesterday and it was me and 15 other guys. That's alright though most said they didn't bowhunt, so hopefully I'll be done by the time they get started.

RE: a request to stop all hunting stories

You guys and your high tech maps. I went to terraserver and first printed an aeriel pic, then the topo of the same area. Then I tried to get the roads to match up then printed another aeriel and then the topo on top of it. It came out not too bad...the roads are offset, so I think the topo is about 20 ft off from the aeriel. But when you know the country really well, 20 ft doesn't matter.

OSTCD??? Is that what they were talking about? I thought they were calculating FOC or some super duper hysteria or mysteria or .... well... you know. Now the weather channel part I almost got.. it's either raining or not. The wind is right or it's not etc etc etc.

ostdc
Aeriel photos can be a difficult thing to position correctly in wooded areas. In order to get a photo lined up with the real world, you need control points with which you can match up th photo to the earth. Have you ever seen the big white X's painted on the road, thats what they are for, to register the photo. Without those marks or other landmarks its difficult to get the photo positioned properly. Then of course there is the distortion of the image from the curved lens of the camers...asleep yet? The pictures are just that, pictures. To get from point A to point B you are better off with a USGS topo map and a compass.

RE: a request to stop all hunting stories

MA_bwhntr, I'm in the same line of work as you.

Unfortunatly, up here in Canada, we don't have the digital coverage of Terraserver or anything like that. Have to make do with what I can dig up (unless someone else has an idea).

Great tools though!!! Everyone should take a look into these and they might find something useful.

Jim.
