fringe benefit of hunting

While I didn't get a deer yesterday, I did find a huge white mushroom in the woods yesterday so I brought it home. Almost the size of a basketball. Turns out it is a puffball, (yep, the same puffball that when dry and old will explode into a cloud of dust/spores when you give them a good kick) and they are edible. I cut a few steaks out of it and fried them up this morning and they are very good - sort of like portabello steaks. Now if I can get that buck to go with my 'shroom I should have the perfect meal!

I love mushrooms but you have to be careful which ones you eat. How did you determine it was edible?

I live in Indiana and my family's found a couple of puffballs as well. You're right they are edible and they're pretty decent.

I like finding sheeps head mushrooms. My parents gave me some the other day. I found one last year too late, I need to go check that place out again this year before it goes bad again.

On spring walleye trips we often check the shorelines for morrells. Those little guys are incredible!
