What tips/reminders can you share after opening day?
Well, opening day has come and gone for most of us, and it always brings some "fine-tuning" with it as far as what I should have packed in that I didn't, or vice-versa. I've been doing this long enough that I've almost got it down, but invariably there's something I forgot on opening day.
In an effort to help our fellow hunters out who are newer to our sport, what suggestions can you make as to what you'll have corrected by your next hunt? I'll offer one: Toilet paper does you no good back in your vehicle. At least put some in your fanny pack before leaving in the morning. ;) |

Don't shoot at turkeys in a peanut field unless you want to lose your $25 arrow/broadhead/lumenock combination. I looked for an hour, no dice. You can't see the light under 6" of leaves.[:'(]

RE: What tips/reminders can you share after opening day?
I live 15 min. from my spot, so it took about 30 minutes round trip.
I was up practically all night - packing everything neatly, and loading the car. I didn't bother putting my bow in the car,why would you do that? Who would be so stupidto forget the bow? Imagine my dismay when I had my treestand on my back, my daypack neatly secured to the stand, and I even had my safety belts on. Well, as I opened the door to grab the bow, it hit me... The race against daylight was on. I got back, andlooked like a maniac sprinting across the soybean fields, lugging my stand, pack and bow, as the first hints of daylight came over the hill.As luck would have it, I buzzed up the tree, and tagged my buck only15 min. later. So yeah, don't forget your bow. I guess I got a little too consumed in the details. |

Have Patience.
Rushing a shooting opportunity can only result in failure. |

Like Santa does, make a list and check it twice. Just don't forget to put a spare key somewhere other than the inside of your truck.

Just because your stand didn't pan out on opening weekend, don't think you need to change anything necessarily. Remember that changing weather, hunting pressure, food sources, and the onset of the rut can bring deer back to the areas you thought would have deer in the first place. If you know that you scouted well, stick with it.
Of course, if it was a half-assed scouting job, pull that stand and move on. ;) |

Don't forget your field tag and a pen.
A bladder bag in you truck does you no good when your in a tree. |

A bladder bag in you truck does you no good when your in a tree. How many other people worry about "springing a leak" from their stand? I for one have let 'er fly for years now, and have several P&Y'ers on the wall to show for it. Study after study has shown human urine NOT to alert deer; I for one think "bladder bags" and the like are just a rip-off -- and I bet they'd be a big nuisance as well. I mean, I guess you'd have to lug the thing away from your hunting area and then you've got to clean the sucker after every use. Just curious as to what others thought. |

RE: What tips/reminders can you share after opening day?
Don't hunt in a field corner if you know where the deer are staging. Deer are much less likely to scent check their staging area than the field itself.
