Just me?

Is it just me, or has anyone else not had a shot yet. Tonight was my 6th evening bowhunting this season, and the closest I have got to a deer was 40 yards. I passed the shot, too far for me. I have seen deer three out of those six nights.

Ahhh, I can't agree with ya. I've been hunting for three weeks, almost every night (I think I missed two nights) and I could have taken deer almost every time.

RE: Just me?

The night before I shot my Mulie Doe, I was seated midway on a South facing hill and just above a convergence of five separate deer trails. At 10 minutes after 7:00 PM I heard a twig snap . . . when I looked up I was looking at around 18 deer two were spikes the rest mature does. They had posted a look out above the trails and had I moved they would have spooked. So I just watched them pass me by. My thought was that if I didn't spook them they'd be back the next night.

Fortunately I got my deer the next morning at a different spot. Two of my partners were there this past weekend and they too had little option but to watch. We'll figure a different strategy for next year.

There's plenty of deer around. One just needs to be in the right place at the right time.

I went out today. Bow just opened up here in Arkansas and I didn't see a thing. It's still way hot. Hopefully some cold fronts will come in. It depends usually...sometimes they're close enough to take sometimes the ones I see aren't. Good luck huntin!

Jeff, I can't console you, our season doesn't start til this Saturday so I'm a little envious you even get to hunt. Have you moved? Hunting the same stand, the deer will pattern you and skirt the location. Sometimes a move is all it takes.

Yeah I've moved. I usually try to only hunt a stand once or twice a week. I just got permission to hunt a spot I saw a lot of deer last year, so maybe my luck will change. What is bad is I need a south or west wind to hunt any of my stands, so some nights I have to sit out, because I won't hunt a spot if the wind is wrong. Good luck to you all.

Jeff, like we said, at least your hunting <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

Instead of sitting out when the wind is wrong, grab your bow and do some ground still hunting or in season scouting. Just stay away from your stand locations and you shouldn't spook anything near them. You might find yourself another great spot, or better yet, connecting on the buck of a lifetime where you didn't expect one to be....you never know, if your not in the woods, you can't score.

Hey Taz,

I don't want to discourage you or make you stomp your feet and scream, but I was talking to a buddy here at work (another bow hunter) and he's itching to go out Saturday like we all are.

But.... He told me based on his scouting, that down here around the Richmond area, the deer aren't really moving. It might be a bit too hot yet and the deer might be lying low. But, who knows.... I've seen two young bucks a few weeks ago scrambling back into the woods from along side a road.

I know, I feel real bad about not being out there, but some nights I have to study too, and when the wind is wrong, I take that as my study nights. I usually do scout when I'm not out hunting.
