what do u think of spine shots

Lets not get into a big argument Just a plain yes or no PLEASE

Do you think spine shots are ethical.

RE: what do u think of spine shots

Effective...yes
Lethal.......yes
Ethical......not for me to say.

I have shot deer in the spine and they always drop on the spot...but...they suffer until you put them out of their misery. The only time I have purposely aimed at the spine was on a doe directly under me. I missed and hit one lung. One of the hardest bloodtrails I have ever had. Another down side is all the good backstrap you waste.

I voted no. I will never purposely shoot a deer in the spine.

Well the way I see it is that you owe it to the animal to harvest it in the quickest andmost effective manner. I personally wouldnt take a spine shot and have to watch the animal suffer. True, mistakes can be made, but I wouldnt purposely take that shot.

happened to me 2x. didn't like them at all. I was a bit high in a tree. would never attempt it on purpose

I don't like them. If you miss the spine you get a bad shot. There's a lot bigger margin of error when you aim at lungs. I don't care what people say...if you can track a deer, the double lung shot is much better than a "take em down" spine shot.

i'd say with a slug gun, yes. With a bow, no.

No

Ethical, NO
I have accidentally hit the spine 2 or 3 times on a deer. Was it effective, YES. Would I ever intentionally do it? absolutely not.

RE: what do u think of spine shots

With a gun I wouldn't be overly worried about it because of the shock to the rest of the system. I wouldn't intentionally aim for it though. Now if it was pretty far away and I aimed for the back of the deer for elevation and accidently hit the spine I could live with it.

With a bow, NO WAY. I have seen video of it beeing done and it almost made me cry. And I am one cold hearted SOB. Just not a shot I would take and feel good about.

I voted no obviously.

That's seems like an odd question to me because I don't think most people actually try for a spine shot, it just happens sometimes. I wouldn't deem it ethical for me to try a spine shot and never would intentionally. I've never known anyone who does either but I suppose someone might. It happens and you put them down as fast as possible.

Paul L Mohr 09-26-2005 05:37 PM

RE: what do u think of spine shots

No I have met a few that actually go for the spine. Because it puts them down right on the spot. Most I have seen do it from a stand when a deer is right under them. They for between the shoulder blades and puts the deer down right where you shot it.

The only problem is you have to put another arrow in it or climb down and finnish it off with a knife.

Like the others have said, it's effective, just hard to stomach if you have any compassion.

There have already been 7 people vote yes on it. Most that say they would have not done it yet though.

What ever it takes to bring it down....and thats the bottom line...bring it down!!!! Or KILL IT or HARVEST IT or CULL IT OR..TAKE IT..........YOU DO WHAT IT TAKES TO GET THE RESULT................WHICH IS DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My feelings exactly.

Although I have never shot a deer in the spine, I have seen a couple that have been and I just couldn't take it watching them suffer. Mistakes happen but I would never intentionally shoot one in the spine.

Would you want to lay there suffering and not be able to move or receive a quick death? I feel we owe it to the animal to kill it quickly and cleanly.

RE: what do u think of spine shots

No not on purpose.
IF YOURE CLOSE ENOUGH TO SHOOT IT IN THE SPINE THEN YOURE CLOSE ENOUGH TO SHOOT IT IN THE LUNGS.

I voted no, But I killed an 8pt once from a spine shot, he was right underneath my stand and moved after a doe when thearrow was released. But I would never aim for the spine.

i don't believe it's ethical to go for for a spine shot but accidents do happen. if i wanted a spine or neck shot i'ld use my 06.

Been there , done that , and no i dont like the experience, id rather hit em lungs or heart and let em run

No I don't like it nor condone it with an arrow.I did it once unintentionally and it was the least pleasant expiration of a deer I have ever witnessed.

I wouldn't do it on purpose.

I misjudged the distance once and hit the spine and it was the worst I've ever felt about harvesting a deer. I was angry with myself for that shot so I know I would never take that shot on purpose.

This happened to me once. It was just awful. I never ever want that to happen again. I really almost quit hunting.

Good god another worthless poll. gees, it's happened to me and I didn't set out to hit the spine. However once I did the deer dropped in its tracks and it sure makes recovery easy. I ain't voting cause you don't have the correct answear for a choice. and you'll have to figure out what that correct answear is for your own self.. I've already decided what it is for me....

RE: what do u think of spine shots

I would not intentionally. But here's a newsflash. When you shoota deer through the lungs it can run a LONG way sometimes. The whole time it is probably drowning in its own blood. Thats not the most humane thing in the world either. We are KILLING any way you cut it. I don't want anyone to think I enjoy seeing any animal suffer because I don't. But I also don't try to make myself belive that any time I take an animals life that the animal finds it in any way pleasant. Just my .02

Just completely unethical - no debate.

quiksilver 09-27-2005 08:42 AM

RE: what do u think of spine shots

I agree with turtleshell - a lungshot causes a deer to drown in its own blood. I'vemade afew spine shots (not on purpose), and it's not a pretty scene. The fact is that they're effective, but a quick follow-up is required. Hunting isn't all peaches & cream, folks.

I'm not one to intentionally make an animal suffer, but sometimes things happen. That said, I wouldn't advise anybody to intentionally aim for the spinal column, because the spinal cord is less than 1" thick. It would take a pretty well-placed shot to split it. There is some margin for error, as the broadhead can enter the disc space between vertebrae, and miss the cord, but still damage it as the bones are rapidly split apart.

In sum, it's easier to hit the vitals, so just shoot at that.

Really, I don't think the cause of death from a double lung is drowning.

I have shot one deer in the spine it ducked the shot. Wouldn't do it on purpose.
