RE: what do u think of spine shots
What do I think of spine shots? Accidents happen!
I wouldn't do it on purpose. |
RE: what do u think of spine shots
I misjudged the distance once and hit the spine and it was the worst I've ever felt about harvesting a deer. I was angry with myself for that shot so I know I would never take that shot on purpose.

RE: what do u think of spine shots
This happened to me once. It was just awful. I never ever want that to happen again. I really almost quit hunting.

RE: what do u think of spine shots
Good god another worthless poll. gees, it's happened to me and I didn't set out to hit the spine. However once I did the deer dropped in its tracks and it sure makes recovery easy. I ain't voting cause you don't have the correct answear for a choice. and you'll have to figure out what that correct answear is for your own self.. I've already decided what it is for me....

RE: what do u think of spine shots
I would not intentionally. But here's a newsflash. When you shoota deer through the lungs it can run a LONG way sometimes. The whole time it is probably drowning in its own blood. Thats not the most humane thing in the world either. We are KILLING any way you cut it. I don't want anyone to think I enjoy seeing any animal suffer because I don't. But I also don't try to make myself belive that any time I take an animals life that the animal finds it in any way pleasant. Just my .02

Just completely unethical - no debate.

RE: what do u think of spine shots
I agree with turtleshell - a lungshot causes a deer to drown in its own blood. I'vemade afew spine shots (not on purpose), and it's not a pretty scene. The fact is that they're effective, but a quick follow-up is required. Hunting isn't all peaches & cream, folks.
I'm not one to intentionally make an animal suffer, but sometimes things happen. That said, I wouldn't advise anybody to intentionally aim for the spinal column, because the spinal cord is less than 1" thick. It would take a pretty well-placed shot to split it. There is some margin for error, as the broadhead can enter the disc space between vertebrae, and miss the cord, but still damage it as the bones are rapidly split apart. In sum, it's easier to hit the vitals, so just shoot at that. |

I agree with turtleshell - a lungshot causes a deer to drown in its own blood. I have shot one deer in the spine it ducked the shot. Wouldn't do it on purpose. |
