The spine will drop a deer in it's tracks, even from a bow however, it's not necessarily a fatal shot and a follow up shot is usually necessary. You should opt for a quick human kill.

The shot you should be shooting for is a double lung shot. Please check out www.kerrlake.com/deer/white2.htm for pictures of deer anatomy. Again, pick a hair and double lung them.

As an arrow kills by hemoraging, vs. hydrostatic shock as with a bullet, arrow struck deer require time to die. Seldom do they ever drop in their tracks, unless the spine is severed. The area of a whitetail directly behind and to the rear or the shoulder contains the vital organs...lungs, heart, and liver. A whitetail struck through one of these organs will almost always die, but not before running for some distance. My own experience has been for double-lung hit deer to run between 25 to 600 yards, with 75 to 100 yards being an average.

The proper aiming point on a whitetail is immediately to the rear of the shoulder, and about 2/5 the way up the body. My best advise would be to do a search on whitetail anatomy to find diagrams to see the location of vital organs with your own eyes. But don't expect arrow hit deer to drop in their tracks. That is by far the exception.

So there is no good drop in the track shot by arrow ,which meanes some chasing. <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Toons a double lung shot will not go far enough to worry about today mine dropped within sight less than 30yds.

Toons, going for the spine can cause you problems if you miss the spine. You'll be out there for several hors if you shoot high and probably wont find that deer. A head shot is for &quot;experts&quot; and I havent met one that is that good on deer.:)

With a double lung shot I have had them go anywhere from 10 yards to 150 yards, but if you make a shot with a low arrow exit hole the blood trail is usually always real easy to follow. Very seldom have I had to track one for more than 150 yards.

If you want them to drop in their tracks wait for gun season, and that's no guarantee either. Go for the double lung shot for a quick and humane kill!

Good huntin'
