How do you guys hunt in the heat?

It's like 86 degrees right now. I thought about going out hunting tonight but I think I'll wait until next week when it's in the 60's. What are the chances of that P&Y moving when it's this hot?

Slim to none where I hunt. Season doesn't open till Oct. 15th but even then the big boys aren't moving too much when its hot.

Well where do you think they are?? In the living room soaking up the AC?? Get out and hunt! Of course I may be jealous cuz I got another week and 3 days to wait!

I just dont think there is a good way to hunt in the heat. I sort of agree that you cant kill them on the couch, but you have to thendecide if it is worth taking the chance of messing up a good area whenmore favorableconditions are on the way.

It's gonna be 103 here today and they're forecasting 105 tomorrow![:-] I'd love to see 86 degrees.

Over they years, I've hunted quite a bit wearing cutoffs, tennis shoes and T-shirt so I can keep cool and not sweat as much. Deer like to be comfortable too, so they do most of their feeding and moving around at night when it's not as hot, then will be holed up in the shade during the day where they can get a nice breeze. And they'll usually be near water, so they don't have to move far to get a drink. You might get some early evening deer out feeding, or some late stragglers in the early morning.

I don't mess with it much myself. It's just too darn uncomfortable. Besides, with all the acorns and all other available food sources, the deer move like 100 yards in 2 hours. They just don't need to move much at all, so they don't. Even at that, let's say I did shoot one, I would have to work my tail off to get it taken care of. I have no cooler to hang it in, so I would have to quarter it and get it on ice the same evening, then go to work the next morning. No thanks. I, too, will be waiting till next week.

down here in florida and in the early season in ky i just wear shorts and a camo t-shirt under my mesh bug suit. if there's a breeze haveing the mesh allows you to feel it. no i found a new shirt that helps with it also. it's and x-scent shirt. the thing is awesome. it's kinda like under armor but cheaper and it's antimicrobial. it's like a mesh but is made to breath more in the heat and keep you warm somehow in the winter also.

Decent....depending on what you are hunting over. For extremely hot weather I would suggest hunting closer to the bedding area as the deer are more likely to move before it gets too hot in the morning and after it cools off a bit in the evening. Either that or hunt a water source.

Air Mesh camo and Thermacell......lots of water. I learned about 3 years ago to stay with it no matter how hot. True, the deer don't move around as much, but sometimes you get a 152 7/8 come into the pond for a drink!

man.... get out there and hunt! You never know when the big boy will come through. It's been 90 here the past two days and i dont know if you read my post or not but anyway.. i missed the biggest buck ive ever seen yesterday at5:15. He was a monster 11 pointer.. Anyway... get 2 bottles of water and put them in your backpack.. Dress in thin clothing and stick it out.. You never know.. I think its better hunting this time of year b/c the deer dont have a lot of hunting pressure on them yet and the move more freely w/o bumping into other hunters!

RE: How do you guys hunt in the heat?

This time of the year can be hit and miss when its warm as it has been all over the US. The deer tend to stay in the shade and seldom come out in the fields when its overly warm. The deer are in the transition stage right now where they are getting their winter coats. Bucks can actually over heat them selves from the heat, winter coating, and putting on extra weight for the rut. I have found that most bucks are staying in the woods untill dark when it cools off. If by chance you do hunt the heat and take a deer, get it cleaned out, registered and pack the cavity with bags of ice, as many as you can squeez in their, get it home, let it hang for about 30 minutes to an hour and get that baby skinned out, let it hang and cool some more for about 30 minutes to an hour, check on it every 15-20 minutes to see if the deer is cooling. If not quater it out, wrap the quarters well with some saran wrap and place ingarbage bags wrapped tightly maybe even tie the bags closed and place in freezer or coolerfor at least 24 hours.

Here what I do when its warm.
Clean immediately after locatingtagging the deer. (If deer is shot in the evening DO NOT WAIT TILL DAY BREAKTHE NEXT DAY)
Take the deer to be registered at the closest deer registration station
Pack the deerwith as manybags of ice that I can squeez in the carcas.
Get the deer home and hang for about 30 minutes perferably in a shed or out of sunlight and with rope or chain wrapped around deers neck.Youll see why as i continue.
Cut front and rear legs off at orjust above the knees
Skin the deer, removing tail bone as well
Let hang for about 30 minutes
Remove the tenderloins and wrap them up and place in fridge for later.
Remove and wrap backstraps and place in freezer
Remove front legs by cutting behind the shoulder blade, should almost peel off once you have the cut made and made properly
Cut the hind quarters off. Using a Bone saw. Cut from belly side where the hind quarters attach to the main body and cut towards and through the spine, may reguire two people, then hinds get heavy
Once that is done, place hind quarters on a table, spinde side down and apread the quarters apart and with bone saw and cut them in half by cutting where you split the pelvic bone for cleaning, wrap and freeze.
If youre like me, I dont worry too much about the body cavity such as ribs and neck. Theres not much meat on them.

Now you can have a cold beverage, fry up them tenderloins and relax and finish processing the deer at your convenience or take the venison to be processed, which ever you prefer, We do our own processing. I was a butcher for 5 years and it was nothing for us to bucther and process 30 deer in 8 hours.

RE: How do you guys hunt in the heat?

I just wear shorts, t-shirt, with mesh camo pants, and a bug tamer up top. Then I just sit there and sweat my a$$ off. But I also feel that due to the lack of pressure this time of year (season opened Sept 10) that this is a great time to see lots of deer and maybe, just maybe a big buck. Its like fishing, if you don't have a line in the water...you ain't gonna catch no fish. Last time I looked the only deer that I could see from my living room were the ones that hang on my wall.

If I hunt, I will hunt near water holes or tall trees in the morning pretty much.

I don't know about the P&Y deer being out, but I know there are some monster dragon flies and grasshoppers out.
:D

In 15yrs of bowhunting, I've only killed 2-3 deer when temps are above 80 or so... They simply rarely move when it's that hot. The only real chance you have is a steaming feed tree. Like persimmons, isolated oak trees, etc.

In North Mississippi rain has been slim to none thisyear so i have set up stands and watched what few watering holes that are left, and i have seen plenty of deer coming to them and its been in the mid 90's. All i can say is after this saturday gets here, i dont care how hot it is, im gonna be in the woods!!

RE: How do you guys hunt in the heat?

I have the good fortune to work right across the street from a pretty sizeable state park. It has been a state park for around 50 years. In that time it has been ilegal to hunt it as well. So there is generation upon generation of unpressured deer. I haven't quite got them patterned (to when and why the move) but I see them all the time, even in 95+ degree weather. I'm pumped about opening day here (in the mid 80's with 95% humidity). I'll sit out nearly all day, regardless of the weather. I just can't help it!!

Just remember to drink lots of water and to take a portable pee bag
