Best Sept deer call
I have been reading a lot about early season calls and every one claims the fawn in destress call works great on does. Up here in Maine, we can take unlimited does so I would love to call a few in. Have any of you used a fawn in distress call and what make/model would you recomend? Secondly, how do you work it?
Thanks. |
RE: Best Sept deer call
I believe it sounds like a doe bleat just shorter and higher in pitch. Use a primos lil' can.

RE: Best Sept deer call
You need to sound panicy almost like a child crying.I havent much luck in them this late in the year.It works really well when the fawns are still young. But as they get older it doesnt work as wel.

Way I heard it splained was it's like a baby's cry. Give your cal a whaaaAAAAAAAA...like a baby in distress adn the does should come a running. I have never seen it in action and only tried it once on the way out of the woods.
I am sure if you look it up someplace (google it) you could find something... http://www.hunting.net/articles/Article.asp?a_ID=172 has some info on the meaning...I think I read the long whaa on the back of a primus call. Tim |
RE: Best Sept deer call
Well I never had a lot of luck calling deer with it, but I did call in a bobcat and a coyote with it last year. So... it wasn't a complete waste of money (the Lil Can that is).

RE: Best Sept deer call
Maybe a fawn bawl or non-estrus doe bleat. Either should work well in September. Come October I would switch to an Estrus bleat or buck grunt...possibly antlers as well.

RE: Best Sept deer call
Is ther an internet site where one could hear the different calls?

RE: Best Sept deer call
Sorry. I found it at www.bowsite.com

RE: Best Sept deer call
I have tried the fawn in distress call. I have had some success with it, but everything that comes in is on high alert and super cautious.

Yep, I was going to post Bowsite.com also. http://www.bowsite.com/bowsite/features/practical_bowhunter/deergrunting/deergrunt.html
It's pretty good. I have not had any luck calling in does with a fawn bleat in the fall. It usually just makes them more alert. I would use a contact call like the TruGrunter. http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=64925&hvarDept=400&a mp;hvarEvent=&hvarClassCode=5&hvarSubCode= 7&hvarTarget=browse I have had pretty good success with this one and even if the deer don't come in, it doesn't make them skittish. Just remember to be quiet with it. I set it on a doe grunt and just leave it there. Good luck. |
