I need answers!!

Anyone know a good home remedy for chiggers?? Lil' bro got 'em head to toe and all the worst places in-between.(told him to wait on scouting) I've never had 'em, so I don't know how to help him. Can someone help him so he's ready for bow season?

RE: I need answers!!

Yeah...sit him in a bathtub...add bleach to the water.

It'll burn for a bit, but them chiggers will dry right up. Seriously.

I've tried 'em all and have found out one truth. There is no good home remedy for chiggers. None of 'em work. All you can do is tough it out.

Sitting in a tub of hot water - bleach or no - will help with the itching, at least for a few minutes. Taking benedryl will help with the itching too.

No scratching allowed, for sure! Scratching only makes it worse. Getting hot and sweaty is the worst thing in the world to do when you got chigger bites, so I hope he can stay indoors under the AC until things calm down a bit.

If he scratches and the bites start oozing, treat 'em with hydrogen peroxide. They'll still itch like the devil, but the HO will dry up the wound and keep it from getting infected.

If it's real bad, take him to the doc and see if he can get a cortisone shot.

http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/nathis/arthopo/chiggers/

Some good info...never had...never want em.

Says in there Warm soapy water will do as good as any home remedy...and to rub down with a towel or something often.

South of the mason dixon line mainly, you carpet baggin yankee!!!!!! Little bitty parasites, similar to fleas except much smaller, can't be seen. I believe they burrow into hair folicules or just right in the skin and they itch like hell.

RE: I need answers!!

From what Ive seen, I dont think theres much he can do now that they are already dug in and itching. Maybe some hydrocortisone creme for the itch, but from now on if you think youve been in them, take a hot bath with the bleach in the water, it seems to kill them before they dig in. but it only takes a couple hours for them to dig in, and start itching. then it is misery, they are some aweful little critters. Worse than seed ticks, you cant see them, and dont know youve got em till your itchin like crazy, then its too late. Ive got a bad case of them right now too, nothing but welps from the knees down. Good luck to him. lol

Get him about 3-4 bottles of rubbing alcohol and wash down thoroughly. Burns like heck, but will help. Chiggers are bad news, if you have never had them or heard of em,be grateful. Also known as no seeums cause there so small. I believe they only have 1 tooth, but it is 3" long...

RE: I need answers!!

You can buy some chigarid. It will help a lot.You can also use fingernail polish.it is supposed to cut the air off from the chiggar so it cant breath and it will die sooner.I got them not to long ago and I had over 50 of them on me.I had them every where as well.I got a couple bottles of chigarid and some anti itch gel.You can use something like Ivy dry also. The chigarid will burn a little on the open bumps but it seems to heal them faster if they are a little open when you apply it.
I have also taken a bath in bleach water.it burns a little at first but you want it to.i took a loofa sponge to open up the chggar bumps before getting in or even while in the bleach water.Like I said it will burn a little but it will dry them out quicker.

The bleach idea seems to by helping. I though Kieth was going to die when that bleach hit his skin. Ya'll are right about the pain. (that'll teach him not to listen to me) I better knock on wood 'for I get 'em. He says thank you, I think. He's yelling again. Oh, well. God bless this forum for it's wisdom and humor. Later ya'll!

Chiggers are alive and well way north of the mason-dixon, I'm in South Dakota and have had my fair share! Always took a hot bath, had pink crap put all over them and then realized they were going to itch anyway!

Completely agree. When I go fishing in shorts and fish where the grass is mowed right to the bank, I ALWAYS see fish hitting the top about 20 yards into the tall stuff. I never can help myself. But I will take a bath in clorox and then use the clear fingernail polish (on my chigger bites of course). It works pretty well. Good luck with it.

I know when I have gotten seed ticks I take a bath as hot as I can stand it. It
will kill them and I figure it will kill the chiggers too. However if they have
already dug in the damage is probably done. Time to use the other methods
mentioned here then.

Is a chigger the same thing as a "redbug"? I do get red bugs from time to time, but never more than one or two and you're right, they itch like heck.

i know this sounds like bullcrap but i have used gasoline in the past and it worked for me. i just rubbed them down with a wet rag of gas. i believe its safer then soaking in a tub of bleach lol.

chiggers man i feel ya pain, chiggers are harmless but they do cause some damage. They are little parasites called red bugs etc. they dont borrow in the skin they bite and leave an enzyme under your skin which causes the itching, once they bite they fall off. they dont cause lyme disease but can cause serious digging and scratching. they usually die when the temp hits 40 and below they thrive in temp above 40. Ive had em so bad on me one time that i took off all my clothes and drove home in my underwear. bleach seems to be the best remedy ive found. but doesnt cure right away.

You've got to be kidding me? A grown man, an outdoorsman at that, and you've never had/heard of chiggers/redbugs? Dude, ever had a tick?

A bleach bath always did the trick for me but I haven't had em in years. Ever since I started eating garlic in about every meal I cook......
