Dilemma, What would you do?
I was given permission to hunt on a piece of property out of state. Originally I was told that it was 100 acres. When I had the permission slip signed, the landowner indicated he had 30 acres. At that time he told me his brother owned the adjoining 70 acres and he would ask if I could hunt there as well. He also told me that another 2 people hunt there too sometimes. He told me that there aren't any stands in place. I dropped $100 on an out of state license and when I checked out the place, his brother said that he already had a few guys hunting on his land, so I'm back down to 30 acres. No problem there, however the property mainly consists of 2 huge fields with trees on the periphery. When I scouted the place, the two best spots I could find had stands placed nearby. Now, I know somebody else has permission to hunt the place, but I don't know when they plan on being there. Before I checked the place out, the landowner suggested these two spots to me as good places to go and said no stands were up. I didn't place any stands before last week because I planned to pack in a climber. Now, opening day is this Thursday. I plan on being there before daylight. Would it be wrong to hunt near (not in) these stands? If I didn't plan to pack my stand in the day of the hunt, I would have probably hung stands near these places ahead of time too. Keep in mind, I have no idea when these stands are going to be hunted, just that they are there. For all I know, they may have stands elsewhere that I haven't located. Obviously, if I get there and someone is there, I'll move. Should I expect them to do the same? After all, we all have permission to hunt the same property. What would you do??

RE: Dilemma, What would you do?
I would try to find a third likely spot for the first day and then see if the other hunter shows up at one of the other two stands. When he does, and when you are done hunting, I would approach him and explain your hesitation at hunting the areas that he already has stands in place at. I am sure the two of you could work something out.

In that situation I say first come, first serve....... If you beat them in there to the spot on opening morning, you get the area..... If they show up and refuse to leave, then you'll have to make the tough call then and there.

I have an idea for you....I always though this would be fun. Sneak in there really early, and go up in one of the trees that they other stands are in, and climb another 10-15' higher in the tree. The other hunterwill come in and climb up in his stand in the dark. Then after it is good and light out, start dropping twigs and acorns and stuff on him, when he looks up and sees another hunter in his tree he will be startled as hell! :D
Oh yeah....Video tape it if you can.... |

Just climb up to his stand and set your climber up there! Or just climb the branches!
Like I said...don't forget to video tape it :) |
RE: Dilemma, What would you do?
I had a similiar probelm this year.A friend andIhad permission to hunt a piece of property last year and this year. My friend killed a nice 8 and a 10 last year there. Well a couple of weeks ago we went in to cut lanes and check everything out. A guy that rents a trailer from the land owner also obtained permission to hunt the property. No problem there. But when I got to one ofmy stands he had hung a stand literally close enough that we could look at each other. As a matter of fact if he was in his stand and I was gonna hunt I would have to walk right past him. Well I talked to the guy and told him his sand was right on top of mine( he had to have already known this as he could see it). I told him that I'd been hunting there since last year and told him of some other locations that he could hang his stand. Well he said he didn't hunt much and he thought he'd just leave it there. Well on the 1st day of the season I went to the stand and there he was. The wind was blowing from his stand to mine...needless to say neither of us saw a deer. The next day I went in and moved my stand (this past Sunday) When I told him he said he didn't understand why I moved. I told him there was such a thing as hunter's ettiquate (spelling?). To me this guy is an idiot. If I had been in his shoes I would have found out who else was hunting the property and talked to them before placing a stand so I could make sure we weren't too close. I guess he didn't see it that way. The worst part of the whole situation was that if I had known about it before the season began I could have had my stand moved before opening day. Anyway I feel I have a better location now and I hope this a$$#%le doesn't ever even see a deer. the nerve of some people astounds me.

RE: Dilemma, What would you do?
One thing I would remind people is that landowners don't want to deal with hunters squabbling over what they see as petty issues. I would call the owner and ask them if they know of any hunters hanging stands on their property and if any hunters will be hunting opening day. Approach it from a safety aspect, landowners will appreciate that and it doesn't make you look likea little kid in the back seat of the car fighting with his brother yelling: "He's on my side."

RI,
I would try to find out who the other hunters are and work with them. Maybe you can all work something out ahead of time. Maybe they don't even start to hunt until the rut. Good luck with it. |
