Elk Steaks are in the making....

YAHOO!!!! Shot a Cow Elk Saturday night after 7 days of hunting in Unit 9, NM. Had plenty of raghorns answer the call early on, but nothing I wanted to shoot that early in the hunt. Had 5 bulls within 35 yards of me at one time (all 4x4 or less) Friday afternoon, what a thrill!!!! Saturday night was the last night of my available hunting time and she walked out at 30 yards and met my arrow up close and personal. My Hoyt UltraMag is now officially broken in.

Can't wait to throw them on the grill!

Hey guys, thanks!
mexhuntr - why didn't I shoot a bull? Hmmm...well...I guess I had put a restriction on myself to shoot only 5x5 or better...kinda like catch and release fishing...keep 'em in the "pool" so they can get bigger for next year. I am not saying I am hunting only trophy racks, but just letting the little guys get bigger. I'll tell ya tho', my hunting partner (only calling , not hunting this trip) was practically beside himself with all those 4x4 raghorns surrounding me after he called them all in (...just PICK one and SHOOT it will ya'?!!!)

.308hunter...yea, I got some pic's...tried to upload them but said the file was too big. Gonna keep on trying to squish it and get it up here.

Congrats on the kill
Oh man, I made a elk roast last night that was incredible. So easy, if you get a chance give this a try.

Thaw the meat out.
heat up some oil and just quickly sear the entire outside of the roast.
put3/4" of water in a pan and chop some onions.
Place the seared roast in the water and season with salt and pepper.
cover and cook for 5 hours at 200 degrees.

when you grab the bone with tongs, the meat will literally fall off. Oh sweet goodness I wish I had more.

Bugleboy........CONGRATULATIONS!! I think it is awesome that you set a size limit for yourself and stick to it. That is the only way trophy animals will develope......as you seem to already know......Let them go so they can grow! Thanks for sharing your hunt with us.

Try taking a roast and making itatian elk out of it.I make venison that way.Well my wife does.Talk about some great tasting meat.If you need the recipe PM me and I will get it to you.
Congrast on taking a cow.And I compliment you on sticking with your plan of only taking a mature bull.Wish there were more hunters like that in both elk and whitetail's.
