Crossbow vs. Compound...opinions?
 

I am looking to makea bow purchase. What is everyone's opinion on crossbow vs. compounds...what are some pros/cons, etc. I have a compound bow that my dad purchased at a garage sale, but I can't seem to shoot accurately consistently with it-the string pull is too long for me, could this be my problem? I will be purchasing one or the other soon and would like to get some opinions.

It sounds to me like your problem with the compound is the fit of it on you, not necessarily its design. I have alot of guys who come into the shop after having bought bows from their buddies or from garage sales, etc... and many times the bow does not fit them and cannot be adjusted enough either. I would suggest taking it to a pro shop to have them see if it can be made to fit you and if not then I would consider a new bow. Shooting a bow that doesn't fit you can lead to all types of problems.

PABowhunter gave good advice , see if the bow you bought can be adjusted to you first since you already invested in it . If it can't then start looking at and trying out bows and crossbows to decide which you prefer .

One thing to consider about the crossbow vs compound is that you will have to learn to shoot a compound (when you get a properly fitted one ) whereas you merely sight in a crossbow and they are not much fun to shoot after that. The compound needs to be mastered but in my opinion thats a good thing as shooting is cheap and fun. 20 years ago my introduction to archery was with a crossbow, my next purchase was a compound.

A compound and crossbow both take practice. Don't let anyone tell you different. The more you shoot either the better you get.They both have similar killing ranges. I hear a lot of people that use crossbows say the lower end ones are pretty junkie. Like the guys said a bow fit to you makes all the difference in the world. Try out both and see whats best for you.

A good fitting compound will do wonders for your accuracy. Also, you'll find them much quieter than a crossbow. You'll rarely (if ever) get a second shot with a crossbow because they are so loud and are not and not as easy to reload.

You already have the compound - Keep it (if you can get it adjusted to the right length of pull) then, go get a crossbow to go with it. Why limit yourself? There a lot of bow-hunters out there who would have you believe shooting a crossbow is easy while shooting a compound is not: This is garbage! You have to control your breathing and emotions no matter what you shoot (including a rifle). All the same factors that affect a compound bow affect a X-bow: Wind, distance, etc. The new compound bows are capable of launching a projectile @ speeds matching or exceeding a X-bow's velocity.

They are both excellent choices: Enjoy them both!
