|
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Three days and my wife can't wait... I've been tossing a turn at night for a week. Every time I lay down I start thinking of climbing that tree and next thing you know it 2:30am. That makes the 5:30 alarm, seem even earlier...

RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
I've been ready! Looked at the weather and if it rains, that will be three years in a row it's rained on me for opening day. [:@] As long as it's not a downpour, I'll be there.
Did any of you tough it out last year on Sat. the 27th? It rained all day and the wind had my tree rocking back and forth about 3 feet. Finally said God, if you stop the wind for 10 minutes, I'm gone. I did see about 6 doe that morning but with the wind, I wasn't going to take a shot. |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
G2 Shooter, I remember a day like that early in the season last year. Sat there waving in the wind and rain all day.
When I finally got down and went over to my sons treestand he said " hey dad, that was better than the quarter ride in front of walmart when I was 3". It will have to be a full blown hurricane before I stay out of the woods thursday morning. Dave |

RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
I like stalking when it is windy. It helps to cover your movement but also hurts you hearing them. It gets you in tune with the woods and tests your TRUE hunting skills. Don't get me wrong, I put in a lot of time to find a spot and get everything readybut stalking is how hunting began.

RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Bucksbuddy, good idea. I was talking to my son about still hunting if the weather is windy and rainy, trying to explain how the wind and rain will help cover movement and sound. Thanks for posting so he can see your reply, now he wont look at me funny when i mention it again.)

RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
I guess one good thing is if it rains all night on Thursday, the deer will be moving Friday. I'm hunting Thursday, Friday and Saturday. :) Might be divorced on Sunday but we'll see. [8D]

RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Ready to go here. Will be hunting the chesapeake beach property Thursday and Friday. Been heresince the weekendgetting ready and at the last minute decided to hang a portable where the acorns are dropping. I will be in this stand on Thursday morning. Yesterday evening I saw 3 smaller bucks of 6-8 points all with polished antlers. Then at 7:30 last night I go out to the store and its right before dark, and right near the driveway is a 125 class buck still with all his velvet .Go figure. I have a few cull bucks that need to go this year and also need to take about 10 does from this woods. Good luck to all...

RE: MD BOWHUNTERS

RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Hi guys. Ready to go here in Chuck Co... I've been surveying the acorn crop - my usual opening week tactic is to post neara Chestnut Oak with acorns and deer poopunderneath it - nada. Many hours of looking/scouting, but I could not find anyWhite Oaks or Chestnut Oaks that were dropping. I think the red oaks will do fine, but it is not their time. My Sawtooth Oaks are loaded, but not dropping yet. I'll put up a stand near them for later in the season, it should be a gold mine. In the meantime, I'll be setting over a sorghum field opening day...
Good luck ya'll. -fsh |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
it's gonna be a great year for all of MD
fshafly2 Where abouts do you hunt in Nanjemoy? I used to live down there off of 224 |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Sideways - I live off of Ironsides Rd, and hunt the local area and the Indian Head Navy Base.
-fsh |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Well, the Weather Channel is showing that it's going to rain Wednesday - Friday. [:@]
I washed my rain gear in no-scent soap last night and pulled out my tree umbrella. Gonna make the best of it. |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
fshafly2- My lease is off of Smallwood Church Rd.
and My uncle used to own a horsefarm off of Rt6, across from the entrance toDoncaster State Forest. What is the old name for Ironsides Rd? 425? |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Sideways
- I'm familiar with Smallwood Church Rd, though I do not hunt along it. Your uncle a Gilroy? I do have a two farms to hunt in the Doncasterarea, but not Gilroy's... - Ironsides Rd is Rt 425. -fsh |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Im ready to go here in Mont Co, Im hunting in Poolesville 1,200 acres with 4 other guys and only 3 of usbow hunt.Cant wait, seen plenty of big bucks during the past 2 months of scouting the fieldswith a spotting scope from 100 to 1,000 yards.
|
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
I've got family in Poolsville, who close are you to the ferry?
|
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
fshafly2
Gilroy's was right next door My cousin's sold the farm when my uncle passed away, almost 20 yrs ago. Zimmerman's had bought the place but I am not sure if they still own it. |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
We are closer to the Poolesville golf cours than Whites Ferry. We used to have a farm of Hunters Lane that we hunted for 10 years which is relatively close to the ferry and the Pepco plant, but 5 years ago the property was sold so we moved. Some huge bucks are taken out of Poolesville every year. Lets see if I can get this pic to work. The non typical rack is one that a young guy shot near our farm, the pic of the buck in the soy is one of a few I harvested last year.

RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Here is the rack at the taxidermists. What was cool about this rack was one side was in full velvet, the other side had shed.

RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Wow, those are some great pics... maybe I need to take a drive to see my wifes uncle and maybe take a detour through the woods.
|
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
I won't be hunting until the temps come down a good bit. I will still be fishing to get my outdoor fix!
|
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Sideways
- I occasionally hunt a farm near Gilroy's (do not know about Zimmerman's). I've been there 20+ years, and recently got permission to hunt another nearby farm with some v. nice bucks hanging about. I have other farms/properties to hunt near Pisgah, besides my own farm, which is near the end of Rt 425 and Rt 6. When I travel Smallwood Church Rd, I often see a crowd around the powerline, are you part of that group? -fsh |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Yes, that's us.
I will be there all day Saturday, unless my wife drags me to the county fair in the afternoon. |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Good luck to you Sideways, I'll be heading out for this afternoon, and should be hunting most of Saturday too.
-fsh |
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
Good luck
|
RE: MD BOWHUNTERS
I use to have access to Poolsville Golf course. Never made it out there due to too many other spots. I heard it was great pre season before the gun hunters arrived.
