This is crap!
The president of my club just called me and let me know that one of his portable stands has been stolen off our private property. Lets see, thats at least 10 stands in the last 3 years. One of our members has lost 5 stands. I'm thinking its someone from a neighboring property. We found one of our stands behind a neighboring farm house a couple of days after it was stolen-that was about 3 years ago. I knocked on the door after we found it and the guy living there said he knew nothing about it. I should take another walk behind that farm house. I would like to think that its not another hunter stealing stands but it sure seems that way. We lock them to the tree and they cut the locks. I thought about putting a trail cam out but they would probably steal that too. Just had to vent!

RE: This is crap!
Doesnt that suck. I have lost three(locked)stands that were on my own property and never found them. Unfortunatley I also think it is other hunters. Do the trail cam thing but be careful that they dont take that also.

RE: This is crap!
My very first tree that that I built was stolen by another archery hunter. Opening day was Thanksgiving day (Florida early 1980's) I climbed up before daylight and another bow hunter came in about 9 and climbed a tree about 60 yards from me. I had to leave about noon so I climbed down and covered the stand up with limbs. I came back the next day to hunt and the stand was gone.[:@][:@][:@][:@][:@]

RE: This is crap!
As I have stated here a few times, I really believe that, if these people get caught, that they should lose their Hunting AND fishing priviledges for 5 years for the first offense and Lifetime for a second offense.
I am encouraged by the amount of motion sensing cameras out there. Hopefully someone will post a picture of a tresspasser or someone actually stealing a stand. We must put a stop to this madness. |
RE: This is crap!
That sucks man.
I've taken to usingmetal stamps to stamp my driver's license number on all my stands in inconspicious places . I read an article that said alot of thieves don't really pay attention to the stamps, because they look like they were applied at the factory, as opposed to using an engraver. And according to this, it's "safer" than putting your social security number on there, and if a cop were to see it, it will register with him that it's a driver's license number, and he can look it up. |
RE: This is crap!
How about puttina small tracking device, like the use on vehicles, on one of the stands. The money spent to catch them will be worth it.
http://gpsinformation.net/main/vehicletrack.htm Or camoflage some trail cameras next to your stands, and hope the tresspassers don't see them. If it were me, after the 2nd stand, I would've started some preventive action against the theives. |
RE: This is crap!
I hate thieves! I would put your trail cam elevated up in a tree across from your stand. One might not think of looking up there, to busy stealing things and wants to scram![8D]

RE: This is crap!
A friend told me a story of a guy that had a trail cam set up facing his home made wood treestand. Well you can see where this is going.... yup he got some pics of a guy destroying his treestand.

RE: This is crap!
It's a shame that you can't even leave your stand on private property without worrying someone will steal it. [&:] I hope the people not only get caught but have something similar happen to them some day.

RE: This is crap!
Rig the stand so that if someone climbs up in it it will fall and hopefully severly injure the thieving B#*%@RD!

RE: This is crap!
that just urks me beyond words....i had someone shoot the lock off my first climber...granted i shouldn't have left it up as long as i did but that was not the point...the fact that there's some butthead out there calling himself a hunter when in reality he's a scum suckin' thief just blows my mind...since then when i repaint my homemade stands i add thumbprints to the camo and a lil something else so i know how to identify it if it's stolen...granted i get the oppurtunity to recover it....hope y'all find the blankity blank that stole it.

RE: This is crap!
Set one out in the open and play the waiting game.
|
RE: This is crap!
Those thieves need to be hung from the stands they stole. No mercy!!![:@]
|
RE: This is crap!
i would make up a cheapo stand or use an old junker stand that looks the part anyway and coat it in anti sieze type silver grease. you will at least ruin 100$ of there cloths. on second thought dont do that they probably will take you to court[:@]

RE: This is crap!
I had a stand stolen three years ago by a neighbor who lived out of state. I actually caught him in it. He said it was his until I showed him my name underneath it. Another word and I would have wiped the forest floor with him.

RE: This is crap!
YEP THAT REALLY SUCKS THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED SOMEWAY[:@][:o][:@] [/align] |
RE: This is crap!
Personally I don't see how you could really live with yourself during season when you're hunting in somebody else's stand that they either built or bought and spent time hanging. If I ever did that, I would hopeto getpunished. Good thing I don't do that. haha

RE: This is crap!
I had the same thing happen on my property 2 years ago. I never posted it but that started me posting. I also found out the probable theif cruises around on a quad and steals others also. So I set out a spike strip at the property line and approx 50 yards further down the trail posted a sign: GOT YOUR FIX A FLAT? He is no longer riding because I noticed the trails are completely covered in now with weeds.

RE: This is crap!
I seem to have atleast one stand stolen a year.lastr year was the first year I actually had what I started with.I put 2 stands in one tree a couple years ago.I had a friend who didnt bow hunt come and stay a couple weeks with me during season.I had just bought one of the stands to put him in and some new climbing sticks.Well i shot a nice buck out of that tree first day we hunted it.I came back 2 days later to get the stands and mpove them to another property and they were gone.Talk about mad.I had them both locked on.They cut thew locks.Atleast they took them instead of throwing them on the ground.Prolly knew I would have the police check them for prints.
One good thing came out of it though. My friend was hooked from the first time I took him.He asked me to take him the next day so he could buy a bow.We got hima PSE and I set it up for him.Unfortunately he passd away before the next season so he didnt ever get to get his first deer. |
RE: This is crap!
I could image how an experienced MARINE like yourself would deal with these menaces to society. Swiftly and diligently!!!
By the way, THANKS for all you've done for ALL of US. |
RE: This is crap!
I've personally never had a stand stolen, but its bound to happen to me sooner or later.
What is the worst part? Having to buy a new stand, or living with the fact that you were robbed by your "peers." |
RE: This is crap!
I can totally understand. I have never had a stand stolen but I have had a game cam or two. It can be frustrating knowing that other hunters aren't respecting your property.
|
RE: This is crap!
Ya know what I ended up doing was to take the portable ladder down after my hunt for the day. Most of these thives are not going to go to the trouble of puting up a ladder to get your stand. And the way most of the stands blend in you don't really see them unless your looking for them. I know its a pain but what else are you going to do except shell out your hard earned money for new ones. Good Luck Mike

RE: This is crap!
If you leave anything in the woods long enough it is going to dissapear, private land or not. That is just the way it is. I never leave anything in the woods for long anymore.after my camera dissapeared.

RE: This is crap!
I hada Lone Wolf stolen that was locked with what I thought was a good cable lock also on private land, that stung! Those friggen things are around 350.00. Isn't there a type of locking set up that can't be cut?

RE: This is crap!
Cowards. Nothing but cowards. Too darn lazy to earn anything on their own. Yellow bellied cowards, every dad gum one of 'em!
|
RE: This is crap!
I agree, I 've had to switch to a climbing tree stand because things got so out of hand where I hunt.
|
RE: This is crap!
LEAVE NO STAND BEHIND!!
|
RE: This is crap!
man that is crap..im just glad i hunt in an area where i can trust my friends and family..i dont have to worry about locking up my stands and all that crap..if i was you id find out who the hell it was and give them a good talkin to and maybe one in the mouth..

RE: This is crap!
A small block of C4 with a pressure release switch and a couple of inches of det cord should do it. You'll need to do some DNA tests to find out who it was, but I'm sure the word will get out.;) I have a friend that has a construction outfit and on occasion a valuable piece of his equipment would get lost from the job site. He had a tracking system installed on high value items like compressors, backhoe and trailers. I think he called it Lojak. One nice fellow decided he needed Rick's compressor more the he did and borrowed the unit. Seems the gentleman liked to do this on a regular basis in a 3 state area and sell the units out of state. These fine people from Lojak tracked him down before he pulled into his driveway. Don't know what it costs, but it won't mess up your favorite tree as the C4 will.;)
