Buck / Doe Scents
Hey fellas
I was just online shopping for this year's scents, and I thought I'd get some input before I buy. I'm all set with cover scent and scent eliminator, I'm just looking to get some input on buck and doe scents. In my hunting setups, I run a lot of scent drags, mock scrapes, scrape drippers and scent wicks. Early on, I use regular doe pee, then in mid-October I switch to a mix of doe pee with a hint of estrus scent. Finally once the rutting activity starts to heat up, I go to undilutedEstrous scent. I always use subdominant buck urine throughout the season, and I stay away from the dominant buck pee. Here's the crux of it all - I'm low on scent, and I need to reload. I like to try new stuff, but I like proven winners. Here's a list of scents that I've killed my last few bucks with. Golden Estrus Tinks 69 liquid Tinks 69 powder XXX Primetime Natural Doe Urine Code Blue Tarsal Gel Buck Wild - Wild Child (1.5 y.o. buck pee) I also use fresh tarsal glands. Now, I'm looking to restock, and I was gonna go with the old faithfuls, but I figured I'd ask around here first, and see if any of you guys have any recommendations that worked for you. I know there are a lot of small companies out there that you can't find at Cabela's, etc. Please post the scent you used, how you used it, and how you know it worked. |
RE: Buck / Doe Scents
I swear by Trails End #307 come rut time. But Like you I like to tinker.
My question is: How can a Buck, by smell only, tell if it's dominant buck or subordinate buck pee? Isn't Dominance more of a trait than an essence? I've seen a six point push around an 11point. Obviously the 11point was the king of the woods but perhaps not dominant. |
RE: Buck / Doe Scents
I've read that the chemical makeup of a buck's urine changes with age and breeding activity. Those changes are detectible not as much by scent, but moreso by volomofaction - the use of a deer's olfactory glands (chemical detecting) on the roof of his mouth.
It's a deer's "sixth sense," and they use it to communicate through chemical output/input. It's all deer voodoo, IMO, but I play the game anyway. I guess that's my best explanation at why I use subdominant urine, because I don't want to commit any "olfactory offenses," so to speak. |
RE: Buck / Doe Scents
Have you given synthetics like B-F Rut a try ?

RE: Buck / Doe Scents
The closest thing to a synthetic I've ever used was Tink's Powder. I mixed that stuff with distilled water, and made my own love potion.

I like the golden estrus. It has worked well for me in the past. Shot a nice 8 pointer last bow season using it. That reminds me I need to post those picks!
Good Luck |
RE: Buck / Doe Scents
Here are three companies that are consistent proven performers for me.Kishel's Buck Thrasher, there are two variations of Buck thrasher I prefer to use the one that is not solely for dominant bucks.Realdeer liquid, and James Valley Wallhanger.I have not done much with scent trails but I intend to do more.I have shot numerous bucks that have come in with their nose in the air directly to my wicks or where I have put the lure on foliage or limbs.I have used a small contained fan dispenser that I purchased from kishel's(Johnny's scent dispenser I believe) it is very effective, completely silent and no lure goes to waste, the cup inside can be capped after your done hunting.Every one of these lures has provided dramatic responses for me.Last year with the use of realdeer I had a matriarch doe looking feverishly around me for ten minutes trying to find the deer that she knew was there but couldn't find. She was very bothered and confused, doe grunting and blatting the whole while.
We don't have a lot of scraping activity in my home area,so I havn't had much success with doctoring scrapes.I don't believe the competetion for breeding is significant enough with our shortage of mature bucks and our way out of balance number of doe's.If there are any more specifics that would be helpful to you just let me know. |
RE: Buck / Doe Scents
Code Blue works for me. Never had a bit of luck with the Tinks.

RE: Buck / Doe Scents
I like the Tinks Scent Sticks(the one that looks like incense)
done real well with that,it gets into the air real well and won't freeze!!;) You can also so use it as a wind detection,I prefer NOT to use the bucket they suggest simply because it saturates the air with a stronger concentration of scent(I know it don't last as long). That along with a Renzo's feeding doe decoy!!,and it's game on!!:D This year I might try this new stuff called "Moonfire" by Wildlife Research labratory,my brother swears by it for the rut. |
