rangefinders in a tree stand.
Just picked up my first laser rangefinder and was wondering where you guys keep your rangefinder while in your stand for easiest access. I got the nikon 440 and the neck strap kind of sucks. Any suggestions.

If you have an open pocket such as one like in a hoodie put it in there.

RE: rangefinders in a tree stand.
I keep it in my backpack which is strapped to the tree. I only use the rangefinder when I first get to my stand. I'll range trees and use them as a point of reference. That way if a deer is coming through I can use the tree as a yardage marker.

i usually have mine around my neck and tucked in the front pocket of my jacket or shirt.....keep in mind that they have a meter button...lol...when i first got mine i didn't realize that and ended up missin' a deer about 5 times[&o]...i didn't realize i had hit the meter button instead of the yardage...big oooops...hee hee giggle giggle.:D

This will be my first season with a laser also. I will probably just have it
in mypack on the tree. I have already ranged landmarks around most of my stands already. Very handy tool...... |

I do the same jeramy does. I range a perimeter around my stand and put the range finder away. I don't range individual deer during bow season, it's too hard when they are that close.
I range deer in my blind during gun season with it though. Paul |
RE: rangefinders in a tree stand.
I bought a range finder two years ago and when I first got it I used it around the house a little to make sure it worked and I haven't touched it since. I always mean to take it to the archery club, but I forget too. I also always mean to take up in my stand to get a rough idea of the yardages to different land marks, but I never do. Its a perfect example of me being compulsive at Cabela's.

RE: rangefinders in a tree stand.
I check distances before the season...Range trees at 20 and 30 yards and mark them, but i only hunt out of wooden permanent stands
When I do have the opportunity to hunt somewhere new I measure at first light and put it away. |
RE: rangefinders in a tree stand.
I range particular trees or other objectsat first light around the perimeter like others do (unless I already know the distances from a proir day), but I putthe rangefinderin the front pocket of my BugTamer suit. From time to time during the day, I measure again to reinforce the knowledge. I do this for a couple of reasons: 1) it keeps my head in the game when I start to feel my mind wandering, 2) I range a fair number of landmarks in all directions around my stand, and I don't want to be confused or have to think too much about distances when I draw.
