Am I Too old?
 

This September 15th (Missouri) will be the first time I go bow hunting. I'm 18 years old and pulling about 48 pounds. Am I too old to be starting? This year Im just going out for the experience, I may go with a guide next year up in Northern MO/

well....the reason I say that ie because most of guys around here started when they were like 10 or 11.

This will be my fifth year and I'm 32,so the answer isno you are not to young but you might want to look at cranking that poundage up a bit for better penetration.
Be warned that bow hunting can be the most addicting thing you will ever do!!:D

I didn't start until I was 18 myself and have been hooked ever since. Never too old to start.

I thought you were going to say you were something like 70 or 80 years old.:D

my goal is at least 55 or 60. Not many of the hefty girls here can pull over 58 lbs. Im only 5'2 and 108 lbs, so it's kinda hard. hammermanhave you killed anything yet?

This is my 6th year bow hunting and I am 36.So go figure.I always gun hunted before that.Now I only hunt with a bow.Got rid of all my guns.I live for bow hunting.

Pace yourself, practice, practice and practice and enjoy.Just feeling the difference between the 2 styles/types of hunting gives you a better perspective. You have all the time in the world. Ask questions when you have'em and watch those you hunt with. Get-R-Done!!!!

At 18 you're still just a pup. I know guys who didn't get started bow hunting until they were in their 50's. I didn't start until I was 23 and have been doing it for almost 30 years. You're never too old or too young in your case.

Absolutely not. One can never be too old to start hunting...and bowhunting at that. My dad didn't start hunting until he was 27!

WHITETAIL STARTING AT 18 OR 38 IS FINE AS LONG AS YOUR IN THE WOODS ...REMEMBER ALSO THAT THE AMOUNT OF POUNDAGE YOU PULL WITH YOUR BOW IS NOT ONLY ACHIVED WITH BRUTE STRENGTH BUT ALSOTECHNIQUE ... AND ACCURACY IS MORE IMPORTANT THEN SPEED ..... KEEP THAT BOW AS QUITE AS YOU CAN BECAUSE THE SOUND WILL ALWAYS GET TO THE DEER FASTER THEN THE ARROW WILL ....GOOD LUCK AND WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!

Are you kidding me bud? I started at 15 but it took a long time to get my Dad into it. At about 55 he finally gave it a try. He is a bowhunting junkie now and hunts alot. He has killed three nice bucks with a bow and has had chances at several huge bucks and has passed on too many to count. We built an elevated platform to practice at deer targets from to simulate shooting from a treestand. He has 2 ladder stands and a summit viper. That has all been accomplished in 9 years of bowhunting. Go get 'em and never look back, except to relish the memories you will be making.

My first bow was 50 pounds and shot 170 fps. I had a pass thru on 4 of 5 deer i killed with that bow. the reason the first wasn't a pass thru was because some know it all at the archery shop told me to use expandables, which is the worst thingI could have picked. guess i can't rip on the guy too much because now he has his own hunting tv show.

You are NEVER too old to start!I am still trying to get my dad into bowhunting and he's 62!

Oh, by the way: My first bow was 45 pounds, cost $85 new and I killed a 5 point on the first day I ever bowhunted with it. As I said...

don't be afraid to ask any questions on here for anything (ANYTHING) you need help with. There is a lot of good advice given around here. People here can help you make your first year in the woods successful. go get 'em

i was 32 when i started...didn't even start huntin' with a gun until i was 24, almost 25.....the important thing is that you start and then make sure you are a safe and ethical hunter....good luck to you.

True Story-I had a friend 50+ years old that wanted to start Target shooting a bow. He had an artificial leg above the knee, missing 2 middle fingers on his pulling hand. I helped him in how to stand & anchor with his hand-he wanted to shoot fingers.
One year later he won 1st place in the State Archery Target Division in his class.
You never get to old.

This is my first year bowhunting. I'm 44 and I wish I'd started at 18. I made my first kill about 2 weeks ago. It was a hog and I will never forget it. I don't know that my guns will see much use in the future. Well, maybe my double smokepole shotgun, but I think I am now primarily a bowhunter.

I'm almost twice your age...35 years old here. I'm also new to bowhunting! My husband on the other hand, has been hunting since he was 10...can't let him have all the fun!:D You're never too old to learn something new....the day you stop learning is the day you die...

Putz. Too old... What's wrong with you... you are only as old as you feel. I diddent start hunting until I was 27, and bow hunting until I was 30.
