It does matter where the vain is exspecially with a traditional rest. Cock vain down. All your arrows will fly more consistant it all shot the same way. ? Why does it have to be called a Cock vain?

He is shooting a drop away rest and no it does not matter which way they are oriented. Just make sure that all are passing though with our touching the rest.
It's called a cock fletch because before there was plastic vanes fletchings were all made from feathers. The feathers are called cock and hen because a male bird is a cock and a female bird is a hen. A single cock has a harem of hens. Thus one cock feather and multiple hen feathers.

I'm a newbie and last weekend out on the walking course my new archery friend that has kind of taken me under his wing tweeked a couple of the nocks on my arrows so the Cock vane flew correctlythrough my rest. When we got back to therange where all the boys hang out I proudly and loudly told everyone that "John fixed my cock vane problem and now I feel much better!"
They thought it was funny, John did'nt.
