How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
If you never shot a deer - how far would you be willing to shoot at one? :) |
RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
Slayer I suppose your question could be construed several ways. "How far away would you shoot a deer" isn't necessarily the same thing as "What is the range limit you choose with a bow". Also you said, "If you had never killed a deer" THAT changes everything. For someone that has never "skewered" one I would hesitate to recommend them shooting much past 20-25yds while in the woods. And I say that no matter HOW accurate they are on the range at 30-40+ yds. Slingin an arrow over 30yds while in the woods is a LOOOONG shot and best left too those who have done it before.
My personal "bow limit" used to be 30yds, now it is 35 because my Hoyt shoots the same pin from 0-30yds, plus or minus 3". At 35 yds I have 6" of drop to account for. Past that, forget it IMHO. To many variables and there are ALOT of tiny limbs and leaves that can get in the way over that range! IMHO even the fastest compounds of today only have 5 MAYBE 10yds advantage on the oldest of wheel bows! RA |
RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
My limit until last year was right at 25 yards. Most of my stand sites wouldn't allow a shot much farther anyhow. Last year I shot a 7 pt. at 42 yards.I consider it as a borderline lucky kill and still am 2nd quessing myself for even attempting that shot.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
I only shoot out to about 35 yards. At 35 it all has to be perfect or I will pass on that. Most of my shots are at the 10-20 range. My club has a 70 yard target on our 3-d run and I can center punch it most of the time. BUT here is a big differance in a foam anamal and one that may move from release to impact.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
The average distance of the last 10 deer I've shot is 18 yards. The closest was 8 yards the farthest was 35 yards.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
I've killed approximately 30 with the bow. The longest being 40yds and the shortest being straight down..... But the average is probably close to 15yds. I've killed a ton at 10yds and a few at 20-25. So for me, I like them up close and personal.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
20 to 25 yards is my goto... That’sthe distanceI place my corn and the distance I practice the most. That being said I do some practice at 30, 35, and 40 yards as well.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
Avg distance is about 15 yards.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
15-20 would be average for me.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
20 to 25 yards max, but I can shoot out to 30 yards comfortably and also 40, but would never attempt it in the woods.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
I have shot 4 deer with my bowthat have been at 40-45 yards.1 deer at 57 yds, all of these were Mule deer here in Utah.
I have shot 1 elk at 30 yards and finished one off for someone at 65 yds, my brother in law had shot it first and it happened to run about 100 yds and stop in front of my blind. It collapsed on the spotwhen my arrow hit. |
RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
if have never killed nor shot a a deer with a bow but the farthest i would shoot right now is 30 yards. i haven't shot much past that but from 5 to 30 that deer would have to have some stroke of luck to walk the way i've been shooting. or of course if buck fever got the best of me ;)

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
I have yet to kill or even shoot at a deer with my bow. Right now I am comfortable shooting to 30 yards, but my shooting lanesdo not go out farther than 15 to 20. So I voted 20.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
20yards or less. If you do your homework and hunt them first and shoot them second, your shots should be that close. Anything over 25 yards in the woods is a long way. Too many chances of clipping something that couldn't be seen. JMO though, I am sure there are guys who consistantly shoot deer much farther thanI am willing to attempt.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
Tough call if I had to summarize it just into one number. Many of my shots are at 6 to 8 yards but on average I would have to say about 15. Last year I took my longest shot ever at 27 yards.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
For my stands in the Oak flats I try to set up for no more then a 20 yard shot.I do have a couple stands that I shoot on the edge of a corn or bean field that I have to get out there.I used to hunt the 100 acres across from me but since the old man p[assed away his wife wopnt let me hunt for some reason. She always asks me to help her do things but wont let me hunt and gives no reason.SO I have permission to hunt the property around 2 sides of her.One spot my favortie is a spruse tree set out about 15 yrds off of her property. The deer come out about 40 yards away. This is the only tree around. So I do on average make 2 kills a year from that tree.I have started setting up out in the beans and the corn make shooting lanes and I actually get to be about 25 yards away then.

RE: How far away do you usually shoot at a deer?
PABowhunter,
The longest shot that I would take is 30 yds± where I hunt and that would be difficult because of the fairly thick conditions. My average distance is right around 10 yards while my high is about 25 and my low about 2. Based on roughly 25 kills. |
