wierd buck (pics)

i shot this buck 3 years ago and were still not sure what is wrong with it. it deffinatly some kinds of injury that caused it. just wondering if any one else has even seen this or tell me what could have happened to him. He was a healthy deer and was surprisingly big the the little rack, please tell me your thoughts.

Don't know the answer...but that is one weird rack.

Looks to me like it got snapped off at the base while it was still growing.

I have seen in person a spike bull elk that did the exact same thing. His right antler was hanging down next to his face floping around and the left was just like it should have been.

In truth I have never seen anything quite like it. Different for sure.

I do not know either, but have in person seen one side grow STRAIGHT down, the other fine. I have heard of rack irregularities being caused from injuries to the body, the opposite side, you gotta wonder sometimes.

Strange for sure.

He knocked the crap out of it while it was still in velvet. While the antlers are still soft and full of blood, sometimes they'll hit it on something and instead of breaking they'll simply bend over. This particular injury was to the pedicel itself, so it would have always grown sideways. He may have even injured the pedicel the year before.

Like shaftnem said...something happened to the pedicel so it is bent over and facing the wrong direction. The first pic is the best to see how the one pedicel is facing up and the other pedicel is all funky looking and facing down. Due to the pedicel facing that direction the antler would have always growm that way.
The first buck my dad ever shot was similar to that. It had a normal forked antler on one side, and the other side grew straight down next to its face.

I have read about how some bucks grow wierd on one side if they have a injury especially to there testicles.Could be the cause.Dont really know.IF you ever shoot a deer with a odd looking rack on one side check them and you may find a injury at one time or another.
