80 yard shot!
I was at a local hunting store a few days ago and overheard a kid who worked their who looked to be about16 showing some guy some arrows and heard him say that the other night he was shooting these arrows and was getting 3 inch groups at like 80 yards! I thought this sounded ridiculous to shoot that well at 80 yards what do you guys think. I'm sayin it sounds like a bunchof B.S.

RE: 80 yard shot!
No, it's possible but I hope he never takes this shot out in the woods. Back when I shot major competitions I frequently shot at 60 yards and still practice that today because it makes closer shots, chip shots. It makes you concentrate and execute your shots more precise because you have to. Prior to elk hunting I practiced out to 75 yards and was grouping broadheads (Muzzy) close enough to damage arrows and vanes.
Olympic shoots shoot 80 meteres etc...so, it's totally possible. |
RE: 80 yard shot!
That would definitely be pretty impressive to say the least..[8D]Heck I can't shoot a rifle that well sometimes:D
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
It can be done, but usually not by your average archer. I used to shoot at 70 meters, Probably shot around 5 inch groups on a good day. I'd have to see the kid shoot to see if I really believed him or not. If he had poor form and didn't shoot that well at 20 yards you could pretty much assume he was full of it.
Shooting that well at that distance takes some commitment and regular practice. I would not even ettempt it now that I don't shoot as much. Sometimes you have to make some minor adjustments to your set up for long range stuff as well. Like moving the peep to a different location to compensate for the rise when you hold over. It's not always that easy to have a bow that will shoot well from 20 to 80 or 90 yards. Maybe if it was really fast. Paul |
RE: 80 yard shot!
I shot field archery competition for quite a few years, with some of the best shooters in Texas. 80 yards is the longest shot in NFAA. I've never seen anybody that could hit 3" groups at 80 yards. Not saying it can't be done, but I'd have to see it to believe it.

RE: 80 yard shot!
wow Dave Cousins had better watch out... :)
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
You mean to tell me you guys cant shoot 3" groups at 80 yards like me? ;) jk. Its possible, just rare.
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
Awww geee.... you guys ...... come on - I shoot 3" groups all the time at 80 yards, with my recurve, with flu-flu arrows - cedar arrows...... man I even do it drawing my bow against my feet layin on my back.....
Bein serious... Id love to see someone do that. I used to honestly shoot at60-80yds WITHOUT sights but I never had a group close to 3" - in fact I was only shooting in my backyard (I was 19) at a haybale with a paper plate tacked to it... I was happy to hit it 1 in 3 shots and did...sometimes all 3- . but 3" groups - he is a machine - I dont care what he is shooting !! Power to him ! |
RE: 80 yard shot!
it's possible, but if i were betting, id place my money against him. on a calm day without wind (which is rare down here), I can usually hold a 8 - 9" group at 80.
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
If it is true, he'd better try out for the olympics.
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
I shoot at 80 yards every 2/3 days. I goup around 6 to 8 in with steel force 125 gr,on 29 in 75/95 goldtip arrows .With my mathews safari set at 94 #.I am an avrage shooter in my eyes.I allso make misstakes and will miss the hole target at 20 yards [2 times in few weeks]. I think most people can shoot this far if they know how far it is and have a pin for that range.
I do not shoot this far to kill big game. The farthest shot I have taken is 28 yards. |
RE: 80 yard shot!
hey, I hunt ottertail county (minnesota) sometimes. My parents have a cabin on star lake. There's some state land by dead lake that I've hunted a few times. I'm heading up there over labor day to do some scouting.
anyway, 80 yards is crazy. |
RE: 80 yard shot!
Hey Arther , do you know Jered Kimmel, PSE prostaff spotty..
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
I'm afraid Jared Kimmel came along a bit after my time. I'm more in the Bob Ragsdale era.;)
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
16 year olds are prone to exaggerate - that is if I remember my high school years correctly
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
I'm sure it is possible but don't ask me to do it. Just a touch out of my range.;)
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
Question: Does it sound like B.S. to you because he looked to be about 16 or because of the distance/skill required?
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
In my neck of the woods there aren't any 80 yard open areas to take such shots....;)...
...and I don't mean while deer hunting either. :) I doubt it though I try to keep an open mind. |
RE: 80 yard shot!
That sounds like a real eye crosser to shoot like that. I was out last week shooting against my buddie at 40 yards, and he put one in the bulls eye, I did the same thing and drilled my arrow dead center into his. I was extatic! Then I hear about this 80 yard stuff, I suppose it is quite possible if you take your time.
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
yea and the kid in my class shot a 50 pound carp,8pound bass on a fly and his dads bow goes 380:eek:
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
i've gone out to 65 yard but thats tough But thats probaly because i shot light 55 lbs
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
3" groups @ 80 yards?[:o]I wouldn't even give the kid the benefit of doubt. I've heard alot of B.S.rs in the archery field. This one would be labeled a doozy.
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
Ok....Ok.... 80 yds and3" groups, I'll take those. This one time at band camp I shot a 16 pt. buck at 85 yds and he reared up shot fire out of his nose and chased me all the wayback home...really:D

RE: 80 yard shot!
Guys I think the problem lies in teh wording. The kid claims to shoot 3 inch groups. I have a feeling that the truth is he shot a 3 inch group. Unless you can do it just about everytime you arent shooting a 3 inch gruop. THere is a big difference between shooting a 3 inch gruop and "Shooting 3 inch groups"!
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
Sounds like this story fits in the DEEP BS catagory.:D
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
Why do you guys think this is impossible?
I can shoot pretty well at 80 yards, me and my friend shoot 80 yards at our club all the time. The more you shoot at further yardage the easier it is at close range. It's all about pratice my friends. Good luck this season |
RE: 80 yard shot!
Most of the top archers that I have spoke with in the past are as humble as the day is long and don't have to brag themselves up because their reputation preceeds them. I don't like to doubt what people say, but I would have to see it to beleive it, especially from a person who has just dicovered what testosterone is all about.
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
Maybe he meant to say he grouped 3 from 80 feet. :D
|
RE: 80 yard shot!
When I wasa kid we (my brothers and I) used to shoot long and recurve bows at 75 yard targets, you know the big round straw ones with the cloth bullseye target that tied around it. They were big targets and we would be happy just to land one on it anywhere, but for the most part we could hit the target 6 out of 10 arrows. Sometimes more, most of the time less.:DMan them old arrows would have such an arc! Talk about instinctive shooting, we'd be aiminglike 8ft over the target just to get them suckers to land.:)
Three inch groups is about the size of a baseball. Man it would be hard to see that, much less put your arrows into it at that distance. It can be done and like someone mentioned the Olympicshas an80 meter range (I think) Even they don't put arrows in three in groups consistantly at that distance. So while it CAN be done and maybe even the kid got lucky (possible) and shot one three inch group at that distance, I highly doubt he can do it on demand. I highly doubt he did it at all. |
RE: 80 yard shot!
about 2 months ago i had tim farmer over to the house. he usually wins the western NC 3-d circuit. we shot a few from around 46 yards to get warmed up and then i backed him up to 71.5 yards and didn't tell him how far we were. it was my homecourt advantage and i thought i could take him, specially since i knew how far it was. i figured if i got 2 in the 10 ring of my target i'd have him. i mean he doesn't compete over 50 yards or so right. well, he picked a spot at the top of the target - something i would never do from that far out. he had 5 arrows. they all went in the 4 inch circle he was aiming at. all of them. i said 'good gosh tim'. he said he'd have a flier before too long. next round he shot an arrow 2.5" low from that distance and said 'there it is'. i said 'WHAT?'. he said 'my flier'. now, this was with his 3-d bow with the long stabilizer, but still, i have been completely humbled ever since. it most certainly can be done.

RE: 80 yard shot!
gibblet, it can probably be done, but to shoot 3 inch groups all the time at 80 is way above your typical ,andabove average archers. The guy that you spoke about has fliers too. If that kid could shoot 3 inch groups at 80 yards all the time and could repeat that at the next olympics, he would probably walk away with the gold.
I spend ALOT of time at a couple of pro shops and am all too used to the group emphasis issue that we are speaking about. I have yet to see most of the people shooting these micro groupsplace in the top 3 at most of the 3-D shoots around here. It kinda makes me laugh when they are claiming to shoot these micro groups at long yardages, and screw up courses where the furthest target was no more than 30-35 yards. I agree whole heartedly with a previous post about doing it once in a while, and not all the time, this does not constitute shooting those groups on a regular basis. I have shot NFAA where the targets are out to over 100 yards. I have pinwheeled 80- and 90 yard targets. Does this mean that I pinwheel 80 and 90 yard targets? No . Just by adding or subtracting the ED on pinwheel in this case, changes the whole meaning of the sentence. I hear this kind of talk all the time, and normally don't even get excited about it any more. Sounds to me likekid trying to fit in................If not, and he can shoot these groups, get him to the olympic tryouts., he will do very well. |
