2005 PA Rut Based on Drury Info

A friend from another board oncegave me an explanation from Drury of the rut phases and how to calculate them from year to year. The essay also briefly explained the use of moonrise, moonset, and high pressure systems to plan successful hunts. For my own reference and planning, I spent some time and added all this info to a 2005 calendar. The calendar also lists the PA deer seasons and moon cycles for Allentown, PA - my general area. Drury's explanation of what to look for is also attached. This file link will be available for 14 days from August 18, 2005. I hope you find it useful.

thanks for the info! I get back from a Kansas bowhunt on Nov 6 and leave for PA on Nov 7 for the week. We always hunt the PA's last week of bow season in and if you are right it looks to be a good week!

According to D&DH's Charlie Alsheimer, the best time to be in the woods this year is going to be roughly Nov 21st. The 2nd full moon after the autumnal equinox falls on the 16th of November, and about 5 days after that should be the peak of the chasing phase.

Seems a bit late to me, but we'll see what happens. My 5 day trip down to Southern IL is the 5th - 9th. Hope I'm not too early!

"the best time to be in the woods this year is going to be roughly Nov 21"

I hear ya......unfortunately that day falls between our archery and rifle seasons and us PA'ers can't even consider it.

Good info, but it does seem a little late to me also. Last year, my best-friend shot his buck on Oct. 14th I believe, and that buck had a huge rutted up neck and was REALLY receptive to calling. As some of you may remeber, I rattled that buck in to within 20 some yards of my stand, but he never gave me a shot opportunity between making rubs and scrapes.

This has really got me thinking though, I was thinking about taking my two weeks of vacation from Oct. 22nd to Nov. 5th, but if that chart is true, I may be better taking my vacation from October 29th to Nov. 12th. Ohhh the decisions :D

It seems a bit late to me too and I'd be hesitant if I didn't trust the source (Drury)as much as I do. For what it's worth, it's ironic to note that I took my buck last year on November 1. It was a setting moon in the morning and during a high pressure system. It would have been blue shaded area on the calendar this year. Coincidence? Quite possibly. I figure I'll try this scheduling thing for a few years and if I keep getting deer when it saysI should, then I'll live by it. We shall see! :)
