What to do if deer blows at you?

I was in my stand and a deer came from behind, where I did not expect him to be. He stood back there blowing for several minutes and I lost my confidence in the spot, thinking he told every deer within a 1/2 mile to stay away. How do you react to this? Is your spot ruined or will it be fine in 30 minutes, etc???

I'd say to hang tight. If the deer finally moves on, then who knows what could happen. I've seen spooked deer run past other deer that had no idea why the others were running, and after a short time, they relax and continue with business as usual. So, I would stay put, and wait it out.

Similar circumstance happened to me last season while I was on the ground. I grunted and a nice buck came to investigate. Too bad I wasn't a little more prepared, and facing the right direction. <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

I would agree with grunting. I think that the deer that are in the area might think it was just another buck that spooked the deer that blew. It's worth a shot.

I had a simular situation yesterday morning when I was going in to spread more corn out.
I looked up and at about 80 yds I seen this big brown form so I just froze. It snorted at me 5 times stamped its foot 3 times when I did not move it just walked away.
When they do blow at you they think something is there and are trying to get what ever it is to move.
Now if it blows and you see the white flag waving at you then you have been busted.

Blow back. That sometimes shuts them up and I've actually had them come in to investigate. At the very least, the area will calm down and be back to normal in an hour.

Some things are true whether you believe them or not.

Tealboy it seems the deer never come from where you think. I can put my stand at the intersection of ten different hiways and the deer seems to always come from behind me. You figure. Last week I had a nice big Doe come in to my stand while bow hunting and it walked around me up to 15 yds as I had a cross wind between me and this deer and after 20 minutes of being around my stand it ran 20 yds up and started blowing and blowing as it was faceing the wind, and then ran off. I was puzzled and mystified as I have taken all precautions to be scent free. All of a sudden after about 10 minutes a small bull moose came from that direction. I have never known a buck to blow other than when it escapes as a Doe will blow a number of seris. Thats why they call it hunting. Later, Bobby

I haven't had that happen to me in two years, but when it did I was walking through a water ditch in a bean field and kicked up a doe about 60 yards away and she started blowing and stomping her feet. I kneeled down and grab my fawn bleat and bleated at her. Next thing I know she starts trotting towards me. She stopped at about 30 yards away then I used my grunt tube and she started trotting towards me again. Next thing I know she is parallel to me across the water ditch. A whole 5 yards. At this point I was at full draw kneeled down in the beans. I put my pin right on her heart knowing I would shoot a little high at that range,,,,,,and let the arrow fly and thwap???? the beans sucked my arrow straight down. I thought I was over the beans, but I wasn't. I hit the top of some beans, but that was one of my best encounters with a whitetail. So my answer is if they blow at you it might mean success.

Good luck and keep at it. Thats what is so great about bow hunting , you get so much more time to exprenice so many different situations to learn from.

Last season I was busted by three does while ground hunting. Not even 20 minutes later they were back. So if you're busted just hang tight and they might be back. If not, other deer might come by.

God bless,
Brandan

I've heard of deer blowing at a number of things, not just humans. People have told me of deer blowing at foxes, coyotes, all sorts of stuff that either startled them or had them confused. I think deer are more used to hearing other deer blow than we think, and it doesn't mean they won't be back in the area within an hour or so.

Discipline -- not desire -- determines destiny.

Blow back,if they haven't winded you they will think you're a deer.

Your hunt is definately not over. I have had deet spook, and within 10 minutes had more deer come under my stand.

A bad day of hunting beats a good day of work!

RE: What to do if deer blows at you?

Ok, I could be wrond but I do believe that the reason for blowing is to identify what has alerted them. In other words they are cleaning mucus from their nasal passages and sinus to get a better sniff of what they originally smelled. It is not a warning sign to other deer but the stomp is. When you see the flag that means once they had a clean sniffer they caught wind of you for sure. Deer tend to give things a couple of chances before they run back the way they came. If they see you once they freeze but if they don't see you again they tend to go about their business. Same goes for scent, if they think they smell something funny they freeze and get a better nose full and if they do get a good dose of human at that point they hit the ground running (although only a few yards so they can circle around you). I know you all understand this but I feel the need to reinforce it. Deer are LAZY. They hate finding new ways to get from A to B so you can assume that if a deer is spooked it is simply passing you on one side or another just out of range (this is especially true in the thickets I hunt in NY). Basically, Tealboy just hang tight and chances are you might get an opportunity to wack the one that blew or some of his/her buddies that are on their way because of their overwhelming curiosity. Hope I helped some....

Hunting is like life. You plan and practice thinking everything is just right and suddenly the wind shifts directions and it's all over.

I was sitting on the ground Tuesday evening when I had a deer blow at me. She turned and began to vacate the area. My hunting partner used his wheeze/snort call and blew back at her. She setteled down and came right back. I never did get a shot, but she did settle down and come back, so I would blow back at her.

RE: What to do if deer blows at you?

There are two types of snorts. One is the short &quot;blast&quot; that is immediately followed by every deer in the vicinity quickly kicking it into high gear and leaving the area at a high rate of fuel consumption. The other is a series of snorts that is more of a questioning &quot;who are you&quot; snort. The deer isn't sure of who or what is there and that is why it hasn't spooked . . . yet. In this case, any type of deer call can be reassuring to the deer that made the sound and can result in shot opportunities. Stomping the feet leaves a fear scent on the ground that usually will alert and scare off any deer that approach for hours afterward. Any deer with-in 10 yards of that spot will smell it and quickly leave the area.

Today's small bucks are tomorrow's trophies.

tealboy I will back up what others have said, if a deer has not winded you, but feels something is up they will blow to try and get you to expose yourself. I prefer a doe bleat when a deer blows near me, whether it is blowing at me or something else, it does calm them down when they think &quot;Oh it is just another deer&quot;, I am sure a soft buck grunt or a blow in response would work also, but I try to limit grunts only to a seen dominant buck and even then I will see if a doe bleat works to turn them first, when a buck is POed he does not come in, in a leasurily fashion.

Way to go Wooly35,
You have experienced The Ultimate Crawl version of deer hunting and those encounters are worth more than a huge trophy, (but a huge trophy would be a bonus though, LOL).
