Best way to stop a deer?

I've always been a grunt kinda guy but tonight i was watching a hunting video and a guy grunted at a big buck to stop it and it ran like someone shot at it. Do you guys think a whistle would work better? What are your experiences and opinions? Thanks.

Zach

A soft grunt has always worked for me, but if you grunted too loudly if the buck was close I could see where it would startle him.

I mouth a soft grunt, and raise the volume if necessary. Be sure to have already drawn your bow; I know it sounds like a no-brainer, but I came back to camp a few years ago while bowhunting Alabama, and one of the more tenured hunters in camp had a wallhanger come through and whistled him to a stop. The buck stopped, whirled and looked straight up at him. He had no chance to draw, and lost the opportunity.

Always used a soft mouth grunt. I did however mouth grunt a doe last year and she really took off. I also saw that on a video once where the doe did not react well also. But I think it depends on how on alert the deer is.

I prefer to just shoot them.;)That usually stops then pretty good.

Just kidding. If I need to stop a deer I just make a soft grunt like sound with my mouth. And I agree, be at full draw before you make the noise.

A pick up truck, would stop them dead, just kidding, a soft grunt works great before the shot, just to stop them I would use the can by primos.

I have whistled before and they take off, so my experiance is not to whistle. A soft grunt if you have the callhandy and I havemade grunt noises in my throat pretty successfully. But most of the time I just drop them.

All I can say is Maaahhhhhhhhhhh., Even though I like the primos can. I don't want anything in my hands but my bow at full draw once he stops.

RE: Best way to stop a deer?

I usually just say "hey" not loud but in my normal talking voice. If the deer is close I say it softer, if the deer is far I say it a little louder but never loud enough to spook, butjust to get the deer to stop. It actuallyworks very good. I am at full draw when I say it.

Theystop after they get nailed with my arrow.. In all of my situations I havent had to do anything to stop one. I would probably do a soft mouth grunt.

I like Arthur P'smethod = Lasso :D

Actually - I never stop them and prefer the walking shot as I like them relaxed when I let an arrow fly and so far (crossing my fingers) I have never had a deer go more than 70-80 yards.....

I do a soft mouth grunt and then get louder as necessary. Ihave found that when bucks are chasing you need to get pretty loud to stop them. If it's nice and still and buck is moving in slow I will either make a kissing noise or I will grunt soft.

I've found that saying "Busted !" in a conversational tone usually makes them stop . Permanently ... ;)

I'm with Bigbulls on this one. A razor sharp broadhead though the lungs usually dose the job.

Ipicked up a bowhunting video by Muzzy calledBad To The Bone Bucks 2, great video, and one of the guys called in a monster, was at full draw, and did a soft mouth grunt. No response by the deer. He did it a few more times and no response. Then he finally made a few kissing noises and the buck stopped right there and he shot. So if they don't stop with a grunt, make a few kissing noises, my dad does this too.

I have only had to stop one deer and it was also with this call. It works great. You can keep the tube in your mouth at full draw. I usually just shoot them if they are walking slowly.

I have a hard time finding anything to fit me:D

I have one stand that goes to 400lbs a North Star, but mostly I can get away with the 300lb capacity. I know the stands will hold much more (about 3x) what they are rated at so I feel pretty good about a 300lb rated stand as long as it's from a good company.

As far as "fitting" good on them....forget it! But I love to huntsoI just make do with what I have.

As far as football goes, I love the sport but now at 40 I'm starting to pay the price. I just had surgery on my left knee on 7-25-05 and have my right one scheduled to be operated on the 29th of this month. My first for the right knee (3rd time for the left) But I'm getting around just fine now so I will be ready for this hunting season. I can't complain though.....football has been good to me.

The biggest difference from major college football to the NFL is SPEED! the game moves much quicker. The hitting I thought was about the same but size and speed of those D-backs and linebackerswas nothing like college. Being a pulling guard I know first hand just how hard it is to run one of them down.

Anyway sorry for the highjack.
