Pre-Rut Calls

Anyone have strong opinions about types of calls that work best pre-rut? I have seen some discussion about Fawn Distress, Grunts, Doe Bleets, etc.

Was just wondering what other people had experienced and had sucess with in the early season.

RE: Pre-Rut Calls

Deer are vocal 365 days a year. Jerry Peterson of Woods Wise calls puts out some excellent audio/video tapes on the vocabulary of deer. If you really want to talk to them, I suggest you pick up a copy and learn the basic social calls, which he refers to as the ABC calls, A- Attention Grunt, used by a doe to call others to her. B- basic doe bleat, call of contentment. C- Contact call, a bleat that rises and falls in pitch over a short duration, used by deer looking for other deer, as if to say "where are you".

These three calls will call any interested deer day in and out.
