Non-Typical

I was reading a hunting article about Non-Typical bucks and it talked about how there are not that many Non-Typical bucks shot and they were wondering why? I know the answer and it is because people shoot bucks to soon like year and a half olds or even two years old. I think if people wait until the bucks get 3 years or older there would be more non-typicals that would get shot. Last deer season I passed on a lot of year old bucks and even a two year old that scored around 120 typical. I was rewarded with a typical 10 point that scores 130 typical. My dad and I only shoot big bucks because we understand that if we pass on the small ones they will get big. On our property we have more non-typicals than we do typicals because we let them grow and get bigger. Let me know if you think you have more non-typicals or typicals where you hunt?

RE: Non-Typical

To tell you the truth, it depends on what place I'm hunting. Some of my hunting spots have primarily typicals and other have primarily non-typicals. I've killed one buck with a droptine and other with a double main beam. But like you said, I think it depends a lot on the age of the deer.

RE: Non-Typical

I think it's mostly genetics. Look at the top typicals. Mature deer with 200+ inches of massive typical points. 5X5s and 6X6s. On our property we had a 3X1 a couple of years ago. A few years before that we had a 5X2. Those were non-typicals but they started getting freaky in their first couple of years. Maturity will bring out some forked tines and some stickers, but if it's going to turn into a Beatty buck, you'll see thatin the first 2 or 3 years. The Hanson buck wouldn't turn into the Beatty buck if he was given 2 more years.
