The wind.....

I have never hunted by the wind, and don't plan on to anytime soon. I've never had the wind affect a hunt, and I don't see what the big deal is. With the right cover scent, the wind has never been a factor, and I will always believe that.

I wish you luck, I have never ,ever seen a cover scent that will completely cover the human scent. I do think that wind is critical when hunting MATURE bucks. alot of does and bucks may come your way, but a true mature buck will always avoid an area that has come over by human smell, thats how they get to be mature.

I would also bet you haven't killed many deer with your bow either. To be consistently successful with a bow, you must play the wind.

I've killed plenty of deer with a bow. I never said anything about completely covering your scent, but if you hunt high, and use the right cover scent, you don't have to worry much about the wind. I don't see why you all think it's such a huge deal. I'm not saying it don't matter, I'm just saying that it's not the biggest deal in the world.

If I've learned one thing, it's that deer see you and can't decide if you're dangerous. Don't move and they won't bolt. Let them move downwind, it's over. Their nose KNOWS you're dangerous.

But you'll never know how many deer have busted you because you didn't play the wind. Yes hunting high will help but that means your playing the wind. Deer close might not smell you however, you might be missing out on the deer your not seeing.

Hey.... its free, why not use it. I was sat in a stand in what I thought was a perfectly still day, not a hint of a breeze. I was all nice and scent free, Hmmmmm. I saw a doe enter the clearing and start eating. For about 5 minutes she worked her way around the various White Oaks and as she took one more step her head went up and started sniffing the air in a flash she was gone. That was in what I thought was a no wind situation. Unless you can get into your stand without moving you will generate some kind of body odour, and prior to climbing the tree that will telegraph your position to every deer down wind of you. If you entered the area from any direction other than down wind you have also informed the deer in that direction. So now we are down to 2 directions the deer might come from. If the deer you spooked entering the wood legged it in one of the remaining directions informing the deer over there of your existance we are now down to 25% of our original area. Like I said its free why not use it.
