to call or not to call?
 

I have my first trip of the season next week Oct 1 and was wondering what if any kinds of call yall use for this early in the season. Our rut isnt until mid to late december, I have seen some does with fawns still. Just to give you a idea of what the deer around here are doing. I am set up in between some heavy used trails surounded bt white oaks and is between several bedding areas. I was just wondering if a call would help or if it would hurt. My plan is to use the food source to my advantage and be patient. One has to come by sooner or later.

paramed214, welcome to the board! As far as calling this early in the season, I must admit that I don`t have alot of experience with it. I usually wait until much closer to the rut for calling. I would guess that a little social calling with a doe bleat would be OK. If you try it, let us know how it works for you, maybe a dumb old dog like me can learn something new!

B.C. is right,doe and fawn talk and don't get aggressive with your calling.if you want to harvest a doe you can try a fawn bawl.the fawn are able to fend for them selfs now so the doe may not responed,but if they do they might come flying in fast.this time of year don't make the fawn bawl real high pitched,make it a little deeper in tone.

Doe calls will work if done moderately(at least an hour apart). I have the best luck early on waiting for the deer to just use their natural travel paths.

Good hunting skills will win everytime.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> That's option number one. I have called in a couple bucks in early October(10-15th of OCT) with just some light tickling of a rattle box. On both occasions the bucks had slipped by me out of bow range. In both cases I waited until they disappeared from sight, couple weak grunts and tickled the box for just a few seconds and picked up my bow. Both came in on a string and were shot at under 10 yards.
