HERES AN ISSUE FOR DISCUSSION
 

YESTERDAY WHILE HELPING A YOUNG MAN SCOUT FOR HIS STAND WE GOT TO TALKING. HE ASKED ME IF I TAGED ALL THE DEER THAT I HARVEST. I EXPLAINED TO HIM THAT YES I DID. I BELEIVE THAT, IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN, YOU CAN GET ALMOST AS MANY TAGS AS YOU WANT AND I THINK THE MONEY IS WELL SPENT TO SUPPORT THE DNR. HE BRAGS THAT HE DOES NOT TAG ANY DEER AND MOST OF THE TIME DOES NOT EVEN PURCHASE A LISCENSE.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS ISSUE. BE HONEST

Eplain to him what your thoughts are on poaching, as that is what he is doing. Ask him to stop that behabior. If he continues to poach, stop helping him out in the woods, tell him you will not associate with him if he doesn't stop poaching. If that doesn't wok, drop the dime on him.

I've got to agree with the others. The fact that he does not purchase a license shows he does not wish to contribute to the preservation of our sport since that is where a majority of the money goes. If he is not tagging what he shoots, he is a poacher. Add in that he brags about it and he is extremely misguided and unethical. You need to do your duty as a hunter and advise the game warden of his actions so they can be stopped.

I am like Bruce I would have left him there.
Turn him into the warden I would even go as far as giving the warden directions to where his stands are.
He has no respect for the law let alone the animals he takes.

Get any information you can about him (name, tag number, etc.) and immediately give all available information to the game warden, state police and local police dept. I know this sounds like overkill, but the idiots out there who blatantly flaunt how they violate the game laws have a detrimental impact on all of us. Getting him removed will only improve the ethical hunters chances.

It's sad that we have kids displaying such disrespect coming up through our ranks. It's not my nature to &quot;call the law&quot; over every legal infraction I encounter in life, game laws or otherwise...particularly if I did not witness anything. Since the kid is young and probably never had a proper introduction to hunting, I'd sieze the opportunity to give him a little mentoring and instill some hunting values with him. While doing such, I'd also give him a stern warning that if you DO find him hunting without a license, there will be reprocussions.

For now, &quot;calling the warden&quot; would serve little else than to put a sour taste in his mouth, likely prompting him to thumb his nose even more at game laws out of spite. Certainly, he won't develop any set of values or respect from it. (BTW, I don't consider fear to be a form of respect.) But if you put forth a personal effort with him, you've got a chance that he may just be appreciative, develop a decent set of values, and fall into line. If you're lucky, he may even stick with hunting long after we're gone.

I certainly would disassociate myself from him until he smartens up and never contibute to his poaching ways!

I believe all deer should be tagged. I think it would be good if all deer would be able to be registered, but don't know how they would do it.

I would say that if your level of confidence in his story is high enough, turn him in.

My bet is he's just a loud mouthed kid thinking he is impressing someone.

I dont know how &quot;Young&quot; this guy is, but if he is young enough to save I might try to explain to him the importance of buying a liscense.It would be much more benificial to the sport to add another ethical hunter to our ranks than to just call the game warden. Not sure where I would draw the line, something like if the guy was a teenager I would try to talk to him, anything older and its time to call the warden. However, no matter how young if he refuses to listen it time to get him out of the woods. If he is past a saving age....I would have to agree with everyone else, make the call.

I think you should turn him in because he give good hunters like us who buy are tags to hunt a bad rep. He is just trying to beat the system and he should be caught.

I agree with parts of everyones posts above. First you should give a try to turn him from the dark side. It's evident that you must have some affection for the boy or you wouldn't be in the woods with him. This also makes you the prime person to try to save him.

If he doesn't listen then get as far away from him as possible or he may just drag you down with him. After all, who was helping him in the woods? At this point turning him in would not be out of line.

I would tend to agree with the others. A good portion of our hunting licenses and tags goes to furthering our sport by either paying the Game Warden's salaries or purchasing more public land for us to hunt on. If the gentleman in question isn't helping providing for that and yet still taking advantage of all of the opportunities then I think he owes somebody alot of money...;)
